Lysol Life-span

there are many sterilization teks out there, and many of them recommend spraying the work area or glovebox with Lysol or other dininfectant spray. Once it is dried, is it really safe to put things such as forks, exactos, and syringes down on the surface? It says on the side of the can that it inhibits mold and mildew for one week. Is there a lifespan? A shelf-life? whatever you want to call it? Once it has dried there are still chemicals there right? One wouldn't want to have dining utensils around the area that is to be sprayed correct? This not about the containmination of our little friends but more of leaving residues around our work environment that can make life difficult to one's body or interfere with the growing teks.

Lysol loses its effect in the presence of organic matter so traces of residue are not a health concern. You could also use 10% bleach as a substitute. Bleach is NaClO...salt plus oxygen. Bleach also has a residue but, when the oxygen leaves, the residue that remains is salt.

but if one were to use bleach on the tank, then mist the walls as per instructed and there is a salt residue... would that not change the ph of the water vapor and harm the fruit? Questions, Comments, Suggestions? to some we are demons , angels to others.Edited by DigiAngel on 06/28/01 01:04 PM.

and what if any Lysol residue comes in contact with the growing material before innoculation? I guess that's the real question here.

I've always wondered what was in Lysol. So I looked. The main ingreidient is ethanol (yes drinking alcohol), which should evaporate cleanly.
