Colonizing jars in individual bags..?
    #3493395 - 12/13/04 08:37 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hi,
I'm leaving for a trip on the 23rd until Jan. 4th and I figured 'What a great time to have some jars colonizing while I'm gone!'. I'm planning on knocking up around 20 jars of Ecuador and having them sit in my incubator for the 2 weeks. The only thing I'm concerned about really is having one jar spread contams to the others if anything should go wrong. Would placing each jar in a Ziplock bag be a good decision or would that just suffocate the jars since there's no air exchange?

Thanks a lot.

Dont place them in ziplock bags, the mycelium needs some gas exchange. If each jar was made to standards, I highly doubt it will spread.

Enjoy your trip, dont worry about your babies. =)

put the jars in seperate brown paper lunch bags, fold over the top and staple the bags shut. It will act as another pre-filter, and keep contams from spreading. Not to mention, keeps nosy eyes away

i am doing the exact same thing you are doing even down to the same days. and i am conserned about the exact same thing you are. and i am ging to putthem in a gallon ziploc bag with a bunch of air from my hepa filter in there. i know alot of people say dont do this but in my eyes its better safe then sorry. come how with 1/2 colonized jars or come home to all the jars contamed. i think 1/2 colonized wins in my book. and no matter how sterile you are you can never guarantee there to be no contams. especially considering i have 3 new syringes that i havent got to try out at all before. and i have gotten dirty syringes before. so i say go for it IMO, but everyone doesnt think like me.
