question about Panaeolus subbalteatus
    #3256610 - 10/20/04 02:59 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

when its said its found in grass.. does that mean grass by cow or horse pastures.. or unrelated.. and if it is found in grass how does one have any clues as to what to go by .. ive been looking and looking and reading everything i can find and the season is underway .. but most of the stuff is too damn general.. well thanks and i hope i didnt break any rules

I just recently found some in crappy grass, and it suprised the hell outta me. Sometimes I believe that no type of manure needs to be present. Gumby has a crapload that grow from his lawn clippings mulch pile.

so if youre looking in grass you have no leads? you just start skimming random grass patches? that seems impossible

Only a few people have ever found P. subbalteatus in a lawn. Joshua was one of them a few yars ago. I do not think they came back since he has not posted any new picturtes form theat lawn. I found them once on a lawn in Scio, Oregon in the early-mid 1970s.

Their primary habitat is rotted hay and compost heaps which are usually a mixture of rotted hay, horse manure, nut shells or dolomite from crushed oyster shells.

They also once3 in a while appear in manure heaps but are also very rare.

Mitchnast in Nova Scotia has a field with them in it. There was once one u-p on Maui on Kula highway buit thae land was turned over to Hawaian Land Homes for the hawaiian people on Oahu island.

I have also found and photographed them in soil and mulch at the UW during th past ten years but only one or two.

unless you hhave a large riding stable which boards horses, then your chance of finding some are pretty nil. Expecially now since their season is over. They are a spring and early fall shroom, They do not appear int he real hot months nor ibnt he colder weather.

One time I was pickin in my g/fs backyard (horses) and on the way back up like half a mile from the horse farm was....a GIGANTIC subb. I'm talking like 5 or 6 inches high 4 or 5 across humungous, but it was badly infested with maggots so I left it there....never came back thought.

ok so i found a good area to scope and ive been checking it.. it is horse dung and stable shavings.. but suddenly it moved so im guessing maybe they sell it as fertilizer?.. also for next seasons purpose does the dung need to stay in one spot for a long time for the mycelium to form or will say monthly or weekly removal never allow them to grow there.. thanks all

As I noted above, Panaeolus subbalteatus season is over int he USA for the winter onths. especially inthe northern hemisphere of the USA and Europe.

They are a spring and early fall shroom with the early fall rains. It is too cold for them in NJ right now.

MJ not to be confused wioth NJ
