Does Co2=Hollow Shrooms????
    #3489947 - 12/13/04 08:27 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Does not enough air exchange cause hollow(with stunted growth)shrooms?Im looking for the cause of my failur.I also had a overlay problem(major overlay)Im looking for the root cause of these problems.I was also woundering if a whole grane millet substrate uses more oxy. than BRF sub.?????Thank you for any help on this subject.....

Genetics cause hollow stems. B+ is well known for hollow stems.

Not only the genetics but also the substrate and the growing conditions.

I have seen hollow stems in every strain.

Hollow stems IME are not strain related, they are definitely related to substrate and growing conditions. It seems all my BRF mushies have had hollow stems they also matured noticably faster which I believe has much to do with hollow stems.

Do elongated stems typically follow hollow stems? That would lend itself to CO2 being the culprit. Perhaps the mushie is trying to survive by climbing out of the drowning pool of CO2 and rushes along it's stem production and development.

well i have had alot of hollow stems in later flushes but they have also been much thicker heavier stems too i fan 3-5 times a day and have polyfil just above the perlite so i don't think i have a CO2 problem but a do have a thin substrate layer on this casing and it is the 3rd flush so i just thought it was normal it is still putting out an ounce a flush anyway so i don't care

CO2 is not the issue either I've had plenty of healthy crops that were not co2 saturated on BRF and they've had hollow stems. Rye, WBS and dung/straw have proven few hollow stemmed fruits. This has only been my limited experience  I also see very few if any hollow stems outdoors where co2 is very low so it may be a contributing factor IMO.

I have had hollow stems on my second fluch of a cake while in the same container as a first flush for a case. CO2 would have been the same and the substrates were definitely different.

CO2 could be a factor..it prodcues spindly shrooms so possibly hollow has come from that too. I believe substrate and conditions being equal, strain does play a large roll in hollow stems. My substrate and conditions dont vary to much..at least not as much as my strains and casings (meaning individual casings, not the way I make them..everything stays the same as I rotate in new casings and strains) And I consistently get solid shrooms out of some strains (GT's, Z's, Hawaiins a few others but those are the most solid) and consistently get hollow shrooms from brazils and cams. Thats on rye. I have tried brazils cams and GT's on straw and all three developed fairly solid stems..GT's still more solid..like no squish to them at all. Just my experience..

has anyone grown any GT that had hollow stems, in any condition? cuz so far i've heard a few people say that their GT's are always solid stems so if nobody has grown a hollow stem GT then it must be strain related.

I have seen pics of some off cakes that were obviously not solid. How hollow I couldnt tell.
