What is this?
    #3489366 - 12/13/04 03:36 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

This is Pleurotus Colombinus. The wheat is very well colonized, then some large body has started growing. What is it? it shown here one week apart. Is it normal? It does not look like contamination. Should I do anything?

this sure looks REAL strange, i wonder what the more experienced gourmet growers say about it :o
dont look like a contam to me aswell,
somehow looks sclerotia like invitro fruiting but given tis pleurotus,
thats unlikely aint it.

Just looks like heavy growth to me. If I had fresher spawn to depend upon I would not use that jar, but there is not any other reason not to use it.

Cool spawn containers. Are the containers and lids both
number 5 plastic?

The big mass of tissue could be stroma. Stroma, when part
of the mushroom decides to fruit and not all the
processes to make a mushroom get turned on
in the mycellium. So it just makes
a bunch of thick mycellium.

Falcon, I hope it's not a stroma of species of Hypocrea, because "my" stroma is 15 times larger than what they can make.

The substrate is brown rice, not wheat. I have extra containers.

Yes, the container and cover are both #5 PP.

I was thinking it may be stroma of the Pleurotus
columbinus. As Yidaki man said, I would go ahead
and use it.

How long did it take to colonize brown rice?

It took 2-3 weeks to reach full coninization, before the stroma has developed. Inocolation was achived with a SW syringe. I have actually experimented with 7 types of lignous materials, such as grain and paper and all were successfull with no contams. There is nothing in the rice other than water and gipsum.

By now the stroma is attempting to open the lid...

Can I grow mushrooms directly from this jar? if so, how?

Two weeks to three weeks is not bad for rice.
What do the other jars look like?

It should fruit off rice, drop the tempature to about
60 degrees F. I ussually put oysters in a big plastic
box that has a hole cut in it low in the box so
the CO2 can drain out of the container. I spray
the inside with water to keep the humidity up.

In the fall and spring I put the box outside. In the
summer and winter I put in the basement.

You want to avoid to much exposure to oyster
spores if you can a lot of people develope
allergies to them.
