Use your favorite pop bottle! I can't remember how long it lasted but it did work.

good thinking peter but one possible problem i can think of is the string becoming contaminated. unless i misunderstand.

Its quite likly the string would contam. It would also probably just create a wet line where you put the string as well creating a greater contam risk and not really letting the cake take the moisture. Mycelium like tiny tiny droplets of water and lots of them all over.

P.C. the string, soak in peroxide, boil it...whatever you need to do. It's a starting point,I wasn't concerned about sterility when I made it...It was in a big box full of bugs.

One might worry about the string sitting in direct contact with the cakes...wouldn't they?

PCing it wouldnt help the water in it..its after you remove it from the PC it will become contamed. And h202 would break down to quickly to be useful..if it would even protect the string..which I doubt.

Possible...won't be known till it's tried on mushrooms. May be better suited to houseplants. But my head says it'll work, especially when fruiting...and I listen to my head.

Take the wick and feed it through airline tubing or the like to protect it, and use iodine rather than H2O2?

Contams would get in the airline tube. Adding the tube would actually create stale stagnant air making it more likly to contam..like putting a top on a humidity chamber. I still don't think iodine would be enough.
Reguardless I dont think this wouldnt work because of the contams..thats just always a risk when you try and add standing water (especially with adding a nutrient like cotten..perhaps a certain non nutrious man made string could be used but I'd be suspect to its water holding capabilities). I think this would give to much water to mushrooms in one place and none where the string isnt.
Hey man if you want to try it, feel free. I've never done it so I could be wrong. Keep in mind, mushroom cultivation isn't about listening to your head, thats a good way to not succeed. Instead, listen to the MUSHROOMS. The mushrooms are telling me they like being misted..but hey maybe they'll tell you something different. I just wonder if what they tell you will be as good.
By the by, might I suggest Banana flavored Phillys?
