Worm Poo Questions
    #346127 - 06/21/01 05:17 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

When spawning worm poo to straw there is a fuckload of worm poo so do you all just spawn the fuck out of the straw? Or work your ass off pastuerizing tons of straw and spawn as normal?

And when you all pastuerize castings in the oven w/ baking tins do you add water before you cook or after? I added water before cooking and it took a while to cool. But if one were to cook them w/o water and add it after cooking then when the water was added after cooking it would cool the castings to an acceptable temp... BUT if you coked w/o water they might burn and get really really dry and not wet like they should. And would they pastuerize properly? I mean w/ the water there is all that steam moving around and mixing up and knocking off contams and termites but not as much steam and movement with out the added water. But hte castings cooled pretty fast when water was added before cooking when they were stirred to cool. Stirring them got rid of all that nasty heat.

Sooo do you all super spawn to straw and do you pastuerize wetted worm poo or dry in the OVEN?

tom.. What temp are you cooking them in the oven? I couldn't decide between pasteurizing temps (around 180 deg F) and sterilization temps (around 350 deg F). What are you doing?

I tried pastuerizing a straw/dung mix, but the straw contammed badly w/ a greenish sort of thing. Do you adjust pH w/ lime or something when you pastuerize your straw?

As for the super spawn question.. I don't know.

a friend mixes worm castings with baking soda, disolved in water, and some oystershell untill ph is right and then adds any water if needed to get to optimum, then puts in a filter patch bag and in the pc for a while. actually in this order: mix poo with oystershell, then add baking soda water untill ph is right and then any additional water.

the worm poo my friend gets is moist in the bag. it is put into a cake pan and covered w' aluminum foil and baked on the
WM (warm) setting which is about 150 deg. This takes place for 45 min and when cooled spawned w' birdseed of what ever the f else makes you randy. it works this way......
but still waiting to hear from my friend about the proper spawn ratios. !/2 gallon of worm castings seemed to turn a large pillow case full of straw very dark in color......looked promicing....I'll update

150 seems too cool warm it up a bit. It took me an hour or so to get mine right (I used a thermometer and a pan of water in there to get the temp right). But mixing worm poo with the straw and then cooking dosent sound too good. Well actually it sounds Ok but why not go grain worm poo then straw. In the worm poo there are microbes and then you spread that all over the straw; usually when doing straw it's just straw and mycelluim not all these other worm poo microbes. It just seemed to me that you would get alot more spawn out of just doing worm poo by its self and letting that colonise nice and goo and then you super spawn the straw; I mean super spawn like layering an inch or 2 of srtaw and then putting the castings on so thick you can't see the previous layer of straw.

I thought the reason for putting the straw in was to loosen or aerate the poo for quicker colonization. Why not just fruit from the castings if they're fully colonized?

Because castings dry out easily and why not have 5X as much if you super spawn them onto straw? The straw & castings together make a perfect nutrient combo and will work... hopefully. The castings should be quite airy by themselves unless you overwetted them.

Oh, then I would pastuerize them together. That should make the sub as a whole easier for the mycelia to digest. Just seems like it would make for a more even distribution of nutrients.

Also, I like the idea of using grain + poo instead of straw + poo. With that I suspect you'd need to sterilize the sub. Again, also, have you thought about suplementing w/ malt or flour?

I ended up supping w/ millet flour. Working w/ horse poop, not worm poop, though. Worm poop has a finer texture and is easier to work with than horse poop. That's my experience so far anyway..

Is it normal for them to contam a little? With enough spawn, the mycelia should win out against the small-time contams.

grain spawn to 50/50 castings, zoodooo (or dung/compost)

colonize (can case it now but it's better to use straw)

spawn to straw

colonize...

p.c. grain
pasturize doo/castings +h20 in oven 180-200
pasturize straw in big ass pot

spawning heavily results in faster growth and more flushes...
but straw can be colonized with a surprisingly small amount

usually layer-keep dumping until bottom layer is almost totally covered
3-4 layers of spawn depending on depth of container.

How thick are most of your poo/straw piles. How much total? Mine are about 5.
