Lowes grow lights - HPS Lighting?
    #3486620 - 12/12/04 02:34 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Well, I went to Lowes last night, and looked in their light department. Now, they were selling 40w grow lights, and it said right on the package, Grow Light - it was a grow light. Now, when I read about people growing MJ in their home (I'm not), its some 400w HPS light, and so how can this 40w light be suitable for growing, when most of the indoor growers are getting 400w (not always 400w, that's just an example - its usually a little higher or lower) HPS lights?

Thank you

Those lights sold at lowes and home depot are more for supplemental lighting in a window seal or something similar. Although you can use them to start seedings and what not, but the tubes have to be just about touching the plant tops.

Hey Man,

Lowes sells a Regent 150w HPS, and OG has a tried a true , remote ballast conversion instruction manual for this light.

I asked the guy if they sold HPS lights and he just kind of looked at me funny. Then I asked him about grow lights and he brought me to those 40w lights, and this guy was the lighting manager/supervisor guy. Would you happen to have a link to that instruction manual on OG?

Thank you

Yeah that's what I though, damn.  The closest hydroponics store (I'm almost positive hydroponics stores sell grow lights - real grow lights) around me is like 45 minutes away

Security lighting?  Never thought of that, I always thought that they were grow lights.

Well, I am not growing anything illegal indoors - but I will be outdoors.  Anyways, I will be purchasing it store with cash, so I won't really have to worry too much about the security issues involved.

Edit: That www.insidesun.com looks pretty good though.  I don't want to have to order it to another place though, it was enough trouble just getting the seeds

Edit: I actually am growing something illegal, forgot about that :shake:

Area not number of plants is important. 50w/sq.ft is recommended.

MH grows beautiful green vegetation but doesn't have the right spectrum for flowering. HPS Son-T Agro has the right spectrum for both but still doesn't get the lush green that a Metal Halide will.

A 1000 watt HID will illuminate a 4' x 4' garden. , how many plants could one expect to put in that size garden.

well you probably arent but if you go flouro dont buy anything saying "grow". look at where they are on the spectrum (these stores are morons and wont know, but they will sometimes have the books that philips sylven GE etc put out. those will ahve teh info). base your decisions on that not what teh minimum wage weekend warriors tell ya.

Just remember to select the type of lighting for the type of growth you require. HPS promotes flowering and fruiting. MH promotes vegatative growth. HPS is in the red spectrum, MH is in the blue spectrum.

To give you an example.... a 1000 watt MH is best to cover an 8'x8' area for maximum growth. I have a 1000 watt and it's amazing how bright it is. Get plants too close and it will burn em to a crisp.

If I was to get a 400w MH Light with the chrome reflector, about how far away should it be from the plants? I will have plants of pretty different highs, so is there a little leeway when it comes to the distance between light and plant? If the 400w MH really covers an area of 3' x 3' then I'm all set with one.

Thank you

use your hand as a guide.

if you can hold your hand under the light and it doesn't get very hot, then it probably won't damage foliage, most plants are different and will react different under hids. be on the look out for burn.

you will want to make the light adjustable so that you can start out higher and gradually lower it so that you dont shock you plants. or you can mount the light and use mike crates or shelves to raise and lower the plants as they grow, this way the tops of the plants line up even if some are bigger than others.

400 watt is going to give you plenty of light and will for sure cover a 3*3 area. you will be like oh shit thats too bright! don't spend too much time looking at the light it can be harmful to your eyes, wear sunglasses.

also i recommend spending the extra loot on a nice hid, many people try to build them, and there is no reason to worry about burning your crib down or frying yourself.
also the reflectors and bulbs on horticulture hids is vastly superior to that of hids from home depot. in the long run you will save yourself money and time by starting with something proper. that being said, if you have an electrical knowledge then you could take this on with little problem.

and if you are using the light 12 hours a day it can get kinda expensive, especially with energy prices being so high. so make a note of last months bill and then look at the difference, just for your own knowledge,  not to worry power company's don't care how much power you use as long as you pay your bill.

i honestly think that you should buy a 250 watt mh or hps from a hydro shop hook it up, and watch it grow. and get a good bulb not a cheapo. hortilux is the best also check out gavita bulbs. i like www.altgarden.com, and order all the hydro stuff you want its not illegal, in fact more and more moms and hobbyists are getting in to lighting and all types of gardening stuff.
