This is the hardening and blocking of the bile ducts.

No, it is generally not connected to drinking although that could be a cause.  I would be very interested to know how much she drinks.  This is actually an auto-immune disease where the body, in a sense, attacks itself.  This is a disease that we dont know much about except that it mostly effects women and, unfortunatly, it is usually chronic and sometimes fatal.  The survival range from time of diagnosis is 7.5 years for those who are symtomatic and 16 years for those who are asymptomatic.  I assume your mother is symptomatic because this isnt really a disease that would be caught in a physical except for when a blood evaluation is done.  I can give you more info if you let me know the stage of the disease (ie. symptomatic/asymtomatic?, jaundice?, any signs of late stage cirrhosis?).

Of course, there are medications and regimens that will help her to prolong her life but the disease is chronic and progressive.  She will be in my thoughts and meditations.
