microwaving substrate?
    #3486204 - 12/12/04 02:44 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

i have heard of puting substrate in tuperware and milcrowaving to sterilize it, but my question is wouldn't that take away from the water content and if so what do you do to compensate? add water after wards?

I've heard of this being done with the PF Tek. PF is probably the only thing that would be able to be sterilized well in the microwave. It would take away from the water content so you have to compensate by putting more water in before hand, because if you put it in afterwards it would hinder the sterilization of the substrate.

BRF/verm would be best. I have no idea about the water compensation, since i've never tried this before. Try a search on tupperware growing, because I remember there was someone who successfully did this and gave information about it.

Yeah, that would be your best bet considering how water compensation would depend on how long you nuked the substrate for and whatnot.  :yesnod:

yes i read up on this and tried it and it is not that great. first you have to figure out the right amount of water for your substrate cause it does dry in the microwave. then the microwave melts your shit. both of my experimants wee acomplete no-go. one got way to dry and the other got contamed way to easily. it sucks ass.

When you say it melted, do you mean the containers or the substrate itself? Because I read you need to make sure the containers a type 5 plastic, which is shown in the middle of that recycle symbol. When you made yours, did you add extra water to compensate or did you try it regular pf and it dried out? I was thinking about experimenting with this.

i did one that was regular pf it was the one that dried out. then i did one that was about 2:1:1.5 verm, brf, water. it seemed to be the right water content for my microwave but it sill contamed easy. and it was the damn lids that melted. the bowls were fine. but yeah that was back before i knew about the 5 in the thingy. so that could have been my problem with the lids.
