Mycobags vs the PF Teck.
    #3485750 - 12/12/04 12:45 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

My freind and I are most likely going to try and grow some mushrooms. What we can't decide is whether we should use the PF Tek, or try the mycobags. What are the advantages to each? We wan't the grow to be as cost efficiant as possible, while still yielding as many mushies as we can (obviously). Are mycobags as fool proof as they seem? Which would be the easiest way to go? Also, do the mushrooms them self grow in the bags or does the mixture need to be transferred?

Thanks for the help.

Start with pf tek.Better to about contam's in a small grow. Then move up the scale.

Bag are no more fool proof than pf tek.Depends on how good you are.

Study and practice.

Good Luck and Welcome to the Shroomery

Yes definitely start out with PF so you can get the swing of things, once you got it down and wanna bulk it up go for the bags.

what is it like 30 bucks for a mycobog?
well for 30 bucks you can make about 50+ jars (very rough estimate)

Yea, jars would be cheaper. I just did the bags as my first grow.

PF would be cheaper for sure. But with bags you can buy pre-sterile grains/straws which is not possible for some newbies who don't have access to a PC. The grains would greatly cut down the colonization times and you also get what, a pound for a small bag or 5 and a half pounds for a large bag? You'd need a few jars to equal that. So if you want a quick low maintenance grow I'd go with mycobags. Haven't tried them myself but i'm debating getting some from my next grow.

Mine have been incubating for Nine days...I haven't done the PF, but things are going well. I do think that if you are trying to minimalize the chances of "user error" bags are probably the way to go. But you are going to pay other people for their efforts...doing it yourself saves money.

Just because other people have already made things "clean" doesn't meen their contents will produce anything...that will be up to you.

Read read and read some more . Is best to start kinda small and work your way up . Bags are great when you are ready for them .

start with pf-tek. it is much more satisfying that you made everything from scratch instead of getting it pre-made. kinda like how cake is better when ya make it yourself, instead of buying a cake at the grocery store.

pre-sterilized bags are definitely idiot proof if you ask me. I think you'd have to keep the thing submerged in sewerage to screw it up.

For example, I attempted a mycobag for my first grow. It colonized slowly, and at one point I thought it had stalled and wasn't going to yield me anything. I cut the heat source to it and left it in my darkened cabinet for probably over 2 weeks. One day I decided I better throw the thing out before it starts growing mold, and to my surprise the bag was fruiting mushrooms.

In terms of yield, I harvested about 42g wet from it, which would translate into about 4g dry (enough for two people to have a good trip). Since then, I've apologized to the cake and I'm coaxing another flush out of it. It's already begun pinning.

But if I had to do it over again, I'd probably just start with the jars. You get more, it's not that hard, and you learn much more about the mushroom.

Good luck no matter what you choose!

It's still tough to decide. I can get 6 bags (with everything in them, pre steralized, just add spores) for $50, which would be split evenly with my friend. We're most worried about not having access to a pressure cooker to steralize the jars. I've read that using a boiling pot of water isn't really enough to kill off everything, and thats the only way we can steralize them. Is it possible without a PC? It would be quite the downer to grow nothing but green mold.

Is the difference in yield significant?

i have never used a pc, i just boil with a loose lid on the pan. i have had about 90 percent success with this method, about 1 out of 10 jars gets contamanated, if even that many.
