Translation of the The Bhagavad Gita?
    #3485361 - 12/12/04 08:52 AM (12 years, 18 hours ago)

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a translation of the The Bhagavad Gita. I just checked out amazon.com and was a bit overwelmed by all the different versions and translations.

Any one in particular I should purchase?

Swami Nikhilananda is known to have made highly readable translations of both Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads.

The This version is great for devotional reading, containing direct translation without all the commentaries ruining the art.

I reckon both Paramahansa Yogananda and Sri Aurobindo have written great translations and commentaries of The Gita.

Here you will find a list of twelve interesting translations of the Gita with the descriptions of the different qualities.

The Gita Online

Hope this helps!

Peace

I've read the Self-Realization Soceity one by Paramahansa Yogananda and the commentary is invaluable. In fact the commentary really makes the two volumes.

--------------------
1. "After an hour I wasn't feeling anything so I decided to take another..."
2. "We were feeling pretty good so we decided to smoke a few bowls..."
3. "I had to be real quiet because my parents were asleep upstairs..."

This is the one I use:

The translation is easy to follow and the commentary is concise and insightful, but your mileage may vary.

I was at O'Hare airport in Chicago a lifetime ago when an orange-robed Hare Krishna thrust a copy of the 'The Bhagavad Gita' into my hands. "The Hare Krishna Society would like for you to have this complementary book," he said. It was an expensive-looking hard-cover book.

"Thank you," I said as I walked away. "He followed me, "Wait! Wait! May we have a donation for the book?" "Oh sure," I replied and put a shiny new quarter into his hand. He frowned angrily and barked, "Hey, this is NOT enough!" "Yeah, but you told me this was complementary. Are you a fucking liar?" Then he got teary-eyed, " Look, I need to make so much per book. Can I please have it back?" I tossed the book so that it skidded 25 feet across the floor. "There is your damned book - and you can even keep the quarter."

That was how I earned my very first 'Dick of the Month Award'. :trophy:

If I could go back in time, I would pry my quarter from his dishonest fingers. :yesnod:

BTW, your sig video reminds of the time I was at a large semi-secluded northern California beach. There was a mega-hottie sitting topless far away from everybody. I was with two male friends who kept ogling her. I got up and walked the several hundred yards over to her and sat down on the sand next to her towel. "Hi!" I said cheerily. "LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!" she retorted.

Hey - at least I took a shot...
