Outdoor and Indoor...Sterile?
    #3483808 - 12/11/04 11:11 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

When growing mushrooms in a closed environment (like a jar or mycobag), everything must be really sterile, I understand. How does mycelium survive outdoors and in the wild? If it is so sensitive to contaminants to the point where if i touch it, it could contam, how do mushrooms exist?

Is it simply because of the closed environment when growing in jars and such? I was thinking about how I should plan out growing mushies when I finally get my own place with a backyard, or at other peoples' houses, and the thought occurred to me...a nagging question I've always forgotten to ask about due to past indifference to outdoor growing.

Outdoors there are no sterilized substrates waiting to be inoculated by the first spore that comes around. You have an equilibrium of many different organisms keeping each other under control(more or less).

I understand that. I'm saying how can mycelium survive in the wild if it's so sensitive to contamination in jars?

Like...how come I couldn't just have substrate in a planter and have it grow like it would in nature? What's warding off all of the contams in the wild?

In nature, there are many diffrent types of contaminants.. If you breed the myc into an enclosed working space, such as the bags and jars, there are diffrent types of bacteria inside you're house. Its called evolution, they've learned how to fight the bacteria outside through hundreds of years of evolving. They've never seen indoor bacteria before, so they have no chance of fighting it without your help. Sorry if i'm not makeing sense, really high and a little drunk.

put a piece of bread in your closet or under your bed and another one outside. i bet the one inside mold and the one outside just goes stale. mother nature is cool that way.

Well thanks for the reply.  It's weird how out-of-tune me (and most people, for that matter) are with nature because of our indoor lifestyle.  I've never even tried something like putting bread outside...I was always under the impression that since there's bacteria all over the place, outdoors would surely be worse-off for stuff like this.

Hrm...now on to looking for a place with a backyard or just a lot I can use to grow lots of mushies
