Girl, 10, Cuffed for Scissors in School
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school.
School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons.
Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon.
"My daughter cried and cried," said her mother, Rose Jackson. "She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh."
Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go.
However, school officials suspended her for five days. Administrators will decide at a hearing whether she may return to class, or be expelled to a special disciplinary school.
The scissors were discovered while students' belongings were being searched for property missing from a teacher's desk.
School district officials have promised a crackdown on unruly students this year, and new policies give administrators the power to expel students for infractions as minor as violating the dress code, chronic tardiness or habitual swearing.
Administrators say the steps are needed to regain control over a notoriously unruly school system, but some parents have complained that discipline has been overly harsh and that school officials have been too quick to call police about minor problems.

oh my god, what has this world come to. how could anyone arrest a little 10 year old girl for that? they cuffed her and took her away a paddy waggon? everyone involved in arresting that girl/calling the cops should be shot.

And I wonder what went through that teacher's mind. She searched a girl's backpack, found scissors, and thought, "Oh noes!  She might kill somebody!" So then notified the school who notified the police? Why would the police need to be involved with this at all?
There's either something they're not telling us or the school overreacted to the extreme

Most schools have adopted a "Zero Tolerance" policy and listed damn near anything that could be used as a weapon. If you are found in posession you are immediately expelled for the remainder of the year.

That's messed up, there was no need to get the police involved in any of this. The girl did not make any threats with the scissors, if anything should have happened they should have just called the girls parents and told them that scissors weren't allowed and that should have been the end of it.

Sorry to bring race into it and sounding like America is led by a bunch of yee-haws in white sheets but I'm pretty confident that if we specifically looked for race, we'd find out that poor girl was black.

If handcuffs are policy, you BREAK that policy when it comes to ten-year old girls. I challenge "To Serve And Protect" if that means dragging a shackled child off to the police station.
It sounds like racial discouragement policy. That's when you discourage people to be of a certain race. The USA are pretty advanced in that but then again they had 300 years of practice in a nation founded on genocide

Wiccan, trust me in this: Racism is pretty bad is some areas of America but it has yet to reach a place where 10 year old girls with scissors are arrested because they are black.
And it is obvious that she is black. Look at the names and the location.
