Reishi Technique?
    #348128 - 06/24/01 07:36 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone know how to grow Reishi?
I'd appreciate any information on cultivation of this mushroom.

Cool, calm, just like my mom. With a couple of valium inside her palm.

Prepare rye spawn.
Sterilize supplemented sawdust/hardwood chips.
Innoculate.
Let grow, reishi colonizes quite fast.
Once the block is overgrown, you can put it in very humid enviroment. THe actuall muishrooms form very slowly.

I prepared some woodchip blocks in filter patch bags. Once the sub was colonized, the mycelia started climbing the bag looking for oxygen. A couple weeks after the mycelia hit the top of the bag, I cut the top of the bag off about 1" above the substrate level. Then, I scooped all the mycelia from the inside of the top of the bag and put it in the dehydrator. Am going to make capsules from the dried material.

What are you going to do w/ yours DS?

I'm not sure yet egghead... Just reading up on how to grow some gourmet shrooms that I"m interested in... Reishi, Shiitake, and Portabella mostly. I also want to grow Cordycep Sinensis mycelium because of its health benefits and stuff. Anno, I don't there's been a question I've asked yet that you haven't had an answer to ; ) I'm also interested in morel just because it tastes so damn good when you batter it up and deep fry it. A couple counties from here they have an annual "mountain mushroom festival" and there's always a lot of morels and usually a few people that grow shiitake on logs and stuff. People go out in the mountains and woods around there and look for morel all the time. I found a few earlier this year when I was just hiking around but didn't bother them. Anyway though, back to the subject. I just want to grow Reishi and colonize cordycep sinensis mycelium for now... If anyone has any recommendations on gourmet/medicinal mushrooms feel free to tell me and everyone else about it : )

You've seen FP's myco medicinals, right?

Here's what's in Stamets 7.. Agaricus blazei (Royal Sun Agaricus), Cordyceps sinensis (Cordyceps), Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Grifola frondosa (Maitake), Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane), Polyporus umbellatus (Zhu Ling) and Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail).

Probably good species to start. The cheapest way to get FP's cultures is to order them in wood plug spawn packs of 100.

I haven't grown it before but here is what I'm doing:
I got culture from Ralph, inoculated agar plates (PDYA) and grain jars (wheat grain, Tyvek filters). Incubation temp.: 25C.
It qrows very quickly - first jar and 6 petris were fully colonized in one week. No contamination so far (at least I hope so). The smell of grain spawn is very pleasant, strong, mushy.
I expanded it without problems and I have plenty of plates and grain jars growing right now.
Here are my next steps:
- inoculate sawdust in PP bags and jars and try to grow reishis directly from them.
- make wooden plugs for outdoor inoculation of stumps.

Ralph: thanx for excellent cultures...

Cool photographical images zoronio - i always imagine mycelia as civilisations spreading - I just ordered reishi spawn and a wood based myco bag .
Eventually I wish to grow it in the big room - outside - on some logs of japanese and chinese origin as the amazing energies will almost certainly be even more awesome .

it has been my limited experience and long observation that this species is one of the most difficult medicinals to grow. truly a science.

Just trying this one for the first time too. I discovered it really likes my liquid culture, better than any of the other species I'm trying. All I did was use the 'empty' culture syringe by pulling in and injecting again into the solution. There was no visible mycelium at first.

This picture is today at day 10, after shaking it up on day 8 because I wanted it to be more mixed in the liquid- it just grew a new layer on top again, just more lumpy. I'm about to put it in the fridge to slow it down until I can take time to expand it. This is just at room temp, about 70-75F here. The jar is sealed, no filters.

The substrate I put the original culture syringe on isn't doing much- I tried aspen chips, no supplements. I wanted to get ahead of possible contamination without setting up a bunch of agar. Should have used cardboard, that works better for me so far with others, but haven't tried Ganoderma on it yet. Oh well I have plenty of liquid culture to start on grains now.

(The solution is 40g cane sugar, 950ml water, 50ml 3% H2O2, and about 1/8 tsp. dry nutritional yeast. The sugar is blocks of raw sugar from Brazil, unrefined, even has little bits of cane pith in it before straining. It's sold cheaply as panocha or panela in latin markets in the US. Mix was PCd at 15 lbs 15 minutes, H2O2 added after cooldown. Inoculated over oven-door draft because rinsing the syringe into it was an afterthought. That it did so well is a happy accident.)

And thanks alot for posting your recipe - not that I have all that stuff but it gives a good idea of how to make a solution for my 'empty' syringe .

Waves of Peace to ya !

Before you make up a big bunch of the cane sugar solution I posted though, you should know that only the Reishi and Oyster (ostreatus) did well on it. The Hericium, Shiitake, and black morel have not been growing. I haven't tried the shaggy mane or smooth 'lepiota' that I'm also trying to grow out.

This is only a few jars, not an actual test- but just wanted to say there might be issues. I was just playing around since I already had the sugar bricks here.

I based the formula, loosely, on Stamets' "Liquid Culture Media for Wood Decomposers" (GGMM). Basically just took 40g. sugars- I think he uses malt- to 1000g water with added yeast. Stamets also added a little sawdust and gypsum. I would have expected the lion's mane and shiitake to do as well; I guess it's possible that the leftovers I inoculated with weren't strong enough to survive the peroxide jars. Or, the gypsum was critical for them.
