Brown Rice Syrup Agar

I was walking through my local health food store and came across some brown rice syrup.. I looked around here and found little mention of it so I decided to give it a try..
My mix: 20 g agar (food grade), 4 tsp brown rice syrup, a spoonful or two of powdered rye, and a liter of water.. I mixed and pressure cooked for 45 mins.. Today I innoculated five of the poured plates with EQ spores.. Sounds like good agar to me.. We'll see how it goes..

Good for growth and germination. Not for long-term storage, though. Did you check the pH of the final solution? That seems like a lot of syrup for 1 L of water.

Yeah.. I poured these plates so I could weed out contams from a suspect print.. I won't be storing any of these.. I made a rough estimate as to the amount of syrup to use by comparing it to the ratio that honey is used.. But on second thought it does sound like a little bit much.. I do think that I used a teaspoon more than I could have gotten away with.. We'll just see how it goes.. If anything it would just slow growth though.. I'll update when I see some germination.

Ok.. It's been two days and this morning I saw germination on all five plates.. Looks good so far.. One question, maybe I missed this or something but I don't know.. Is it not standard practice to incubate agar plates upside down to keep condensation from raining down on the agar? When I looked at my plates I saw that in all cases the mycelium was growing towards the lid of the plate and not along the surface of the agar.. I have been storing them upside down up until now when I flipped them over.. So, what's the general consensus? Incubate agar plates upside down or not?

You don't need to incubate upside down. Just store plates that have been poured but not innoc'd.
