ummmm, mycobags filling w/ water???
    #3472695 - 12/09/04 07:43 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I just got a pressure cooker and mycobags (gotta admit, the 25-qt All American looks nice, was almost a little aroused )

Anyway, I sterilized a bag of sawdust, pulled the bag out, and saw like 2" of water in the bottom-is this normal/will it re-equilibrate within a day or 2, or are my bags leaking and letting water in?

Mark

2" ? That is quite a lot.
Think that is too much water to re-equilibrating
Seems as if your mycobag would leak.
Or was the substrate so wet ?

2" seems like way too much for it to come from the substrate alone being too wet. Check that you are not sucking water in through the filter patch when it cools down. I always fold mine over so the filter patch is on the inside of the fold, so it is not exposed to water droplets...

You may try placing a piece of packaging tape over the patch...

Damn, atwar--thanks--I had the patch facing up, perhaps it was just sucking stuff in.......I drained the wood for like 1 hr in a colander, so I would have thought it wasn't too wet anymore, how long do you all drain?

My sawdust is actually animal bedding from the store. It is not sawdust, it is not shavings, but more like mini-chips (or splinters). I usually only soak this for a few hours, and then drain it off for perhaps a half hour or so. How long are you soaking? Wood does not require an overnight soak, and could become water logged...

I don't think packing tape is autoclavable.

Indeed it is. I use it to seal my mycobags...
Scotch brand mailing, or mailing and storage...

Really...
Good to know, thanks.

But wouldn't taping over the patch, kind of defeat the purpose, or does it still come off alright after PCing.

Here is a run down of how I do it.
Soak for five hours or so sawdust/bran.
Throw in bags.
Fold the bag once and wrap around the rest.
The patch wouldnt alow that much water in. I think it was just to soggy of a mix.
and the cooking kinda pussed the water out of the saterated substrate causing it to collect.
