Makin honey water
    #3449257 - 12/05/04 09:12 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Did just prepare two jars of honey water!

100ml water and one stuffed teaspoon of honey for each jar

Drilled a hole in the lid and stuffed it with polyfil.

Pressure cooked for about 20min

The liquid looks about the same as it were before the boil
so I reckon it hasn't carmalized much

5th day. Something has collected in the bottom, a slight shake will
swirl it around and make the solution somewhat foggy. No signs of fluff

you shouldnt swirl untill you see the little "cotton balls" in the jar. that way it will be easy to see contams. but it looks all foggy if its mycelium. wait longer next time it can take up to 6 days just for the spores to germinate.

Luckly I didnt swirl one of the jars asmuch as the other
Thought they would germinate faster in honey. I'll stay put and
see what happends. Thinking of maybe making a jar with a table-spoon
of honey. Some people & teks says table, some tea..confused* :smirk:

You can use what you want. I use a tablespoon, sometimes two. Most say a teaspoon is enough..I'm all about thick liquid myc.

Swirling won't hurt..I swirl every day while they're incubating starting day 2-3 when I see growth. Break it up and introduce air into the water.

Thats a neverending debate. I think the original recipe I read was one teaspoon but either works fine. Do whichever you want. Goodluck.

I decided to throw the honey water. In one of them something
had collected on the bottom. It didnt smell any odd, just like
regular honey-water. So if it would have worked, it would have
smelled like cubensis mycelium & honey?

Im gonna try with little less honey, and maybe a different brand
to see if it'll work better

I found corn syrup but they all contained salt so I guess they wont work? :-O

Too much sugar(honey) content will retard the growth.
try to stick to 4% by wieght -- 1 teaspoon.

Well I do use Karo if that makes a difference. I prepare 60ml syringes at a time from my 100ml cultures and have used this recipe for quite some time without any issue or retardation of growth. Like I said...people can use what they want..most stick with the 1 teaspoon but I use a tablespoon of karo myself -shrug-.

Yo mates don't use to much honey.
more sugar doesn't mean faster colonization in an area rich in nutrients, the mycelium will branch often and grow slowly, so maximizing the amount of nutrients it can extract. By contrast, in an area low in nutrients the hyphae(single cord of mycelia) grow more rapidly and with little branching.
So the more nutrients you add the slower the growth will be so i guess we need to find out in what ratio the honey and water should be mixed for fast colonization but with enough branching to easy form mushrooms.

I'd like to hear Agar's take on this since he was just talking about making thick liquid slurries the other day. He does say his liquid nocs done properly are as fast or faster then grain to grain transfers, which certainly isnt the case for me..I never had a problem with liquid myc..7-10 days to colonize a quart for a cc but still not that fast..of course he uses malt so that might be a different story too. Is malt a sugar as well? Isn't it a complex carbohydrate but not a sugar? If so you could maybe use more of it for liquid cultures? Just throwing out some ideas, I have only been using liquid cultures for 3-4 months now but I do quite a few jars (probably more pounds of whole grains then alot of people using bulk substrates, among a having a culture for all 11 strains I have and 2 substrains) and have never had a problem. Doesnt mean it cant improve though so I certainly could be wrong..I just post what I do and the results that I gather from what I do..can't offer ny more then that. Well anyways, enough rambling..lets hear some more info..
