First time with bags, questions

I bought some of these

Never even thought to check to make sure they where sealable before ordering, it doesn't appear they are. Is there a way to seal bags without buying one of those sealer thingies?
Secondly, the bags have a microporous filter patch, so does this mean I can PC them sealed?

i think you can just fold the top over twice and clip it shut. but an impulse sealer is alot better

Just take a lighter to it, dont make direct contact between the flame and the bag but get it close.

kind of like sealing a cigarette cellophane, yeah, i can see that working.
just don't let it catch on fire.
the hot screwdriver might work, but it'll be kind of bitchy to work with IMO.
you can PC them closed. just leave the patch up so it doesn't get wet.

zeroarmy doesn't know what he's talking about. If they are in fact not presealable you cannot PC them sealed. That is why they are "NOT presealable" Where did you order them from? If mycobag, and you didnt specify presealable, they arent. Impulse sealers are very cheap, 20-30 on ebay.

LOL......
100% sealing autoclave bags 100% of the time is what an impulse sealer is exactly for.
A bic lighter, iron, heated wire makes a mess & you can never be sure of a 100% seal. That defeats the purpose of an autoclave bag. Just like trying to saw, with a hammer, or trying to hammer with a saw. It just doesnt work.
Even a 99.9% seal doesnt work. You move & flex a loaded bag, it sucks or blows like a bellows ----> in or out of any unsealed part, making the filter patch ineffective.
Better than some, but not perfect. With double folded top, held by big metal paper clips, PC bags, allow to cool to room temp inside PC.
Remove in aseptic conditions, G2G (glove box or flowhood -- if you have one), seal bag with alc swabbed Scotch brand long term 2 inch wide clear storage tape ($4) - one piece each side, with 1/2 inch overlap tape to tape on top & sides.
If you ever buy bags in BULK, 100, 500, 1000 -- BUY AN IMPULSE SEALER, or you end up WASTING a lot of work & material via contamination.

because they arent presealable. The presealable ones have a special micropourous filter that allows enough gas exchange that they do not burst. The non presealable one's dont have this special filter. They still have a micropourous filter, but not one that can exchange gases fast enough to not burst. Look at mycobags site, he sells presealable and non presealable bags. Price reflects this difference.

NP, definetly go with the presealable ones, it makes a huge difference and is much easier. If you really want to be lazy go with the presealable ones with self healing inoculation point, those are pretty cool. Your sig still always makes me laugh.

COMMERCIAL growers don't use self seal innoc point. It's sales hype.
Alc swab innoc spot, innoc straight through bag & tape over with alc swabbed tape.

It is sales hype and costs nearly $1.50 more per bag. For the lazy people who don't think they can use tape right, they're a good choice if they don't mind the price. I find it hard for the alcohol swabbed tape to stick, you have to let it dry before you can stick it.

Try scotch brand long term storage tape. Swab with gloved finger, not cotton or cloth. You ever heard of milipore, transpore - or micropore tape. It's out there (search google & eBay). I have used milipore tape as a filter patch on bags & seal agar plates with it.

I got the self healing and I think they are great. I also used duct tape to keep bags closed cuz i didn't have paper clips and that worked fine too, just melted some.

Its "Beauiful FUCKING tit's man"
Make sure you swab the bag!!!! I'm unsure if it was my shitty impulse sealing (I'd suggest two seals half an inch apart to make sure you got it right and practice with the sealer!) or not swabbing the outside but when I tried them mycobags I got 10 out of 10 contams..with regular oven bags modified (as shown in many posts and pictures..including a recent post) with the polyfil lid in top for "self healing injection" no contams. I'm not knocking the bags..just saying was more difficult for me to work with then jars..I know someday it will have to be done but that will be when I have the excess time and funds to expand in that way. Bags move around though and pull in air so damned easy..
Anyways..good luck!
