Spent casing/cakes....
    #3475121 - 12/10/04 09:17 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

So after 3-5 flushes you decide the casing isnt worth your time and effort anytime....anyone every through it in a new tub of poo/straw or what not and let it colonize?

any issues?

If substate is SPENT..... or any tiny blue/green/cobweb mold shows up. :mad2:

Best to remove & throw on garden veggy compost pile, or dumpster tek.

So long as it is, or stands a chance of being productive. No reason to trash it. As the mushroom and mycelium grows there will be a drop of pH from the excreted metabolites until the pH reaches 5.0-5.5 at which time mushroom production will generally cease. Meaning, you can test substrate pH, to see if its worth keeping.

So THATS why it ceases.

You know what else I just relized..my last few casings didnt go as long as previous ones (I kept them extra time, to lazy to make new jars for a bit)..and I stopped using calc carbonate..only using coir/verm but I'm not so sure it didnt help in the later flushes..ah well interesting thoughts.

I guess its time to switch to 50/50+

My first ventures into bulk involved PF cakes that had completed two or three flushes; they were ground up and then used to spawn pasteurized straw. It worked pretty well, and would have produced more if I'd had more knowledge of casing maintenance.

It's a great way to experiment with bulk for those without access to a PC.
