FILTER PATCH ABOUT ANYTHING
    #3474887 - 12/10/04 05:01 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

If you are tired of adding big pieces of tyvek filter UNDER jar LIDS?

Put tiny pieces on top your lids:

If you have BAGS without filter patches, ADD SOME

Want your tub-incubator to have some filtered gas exchange.

Get TYVEK (in USA - we all know where).

Get some of this HIGH TEMP RTV SILICONE GASKET MAKER:
(will withstand PC temp?s)

Or, any equivalent HIGH TEMP brand gasket maker.

For jar lids, simply use gasket maker as glue & glue tyvek over lid holes.(allow to cure 24 hours)

For non-filter-patch autoclave BAGS, simply use paper punch & punch 9 holes in tight pattern like this:

ooo
ooo
ooo

Cut tyvek to shape & glue over holes.
(allow to cure 24 hours)

For bulk bag filter application:

Cut short piece 1.5 inch PVC pipe 6 inches long.

Squeeze out gasket maker tube content into small jar (w/air-tight lid- for later storage).

Perforate bag in tight circle pattern with paper punch.

Dip pvc pipe in gasket maker, stamp bag over holes with pipe, apply tyvek over gasket ring pipe leaves on bag. :tongue2:

Hey agar I did not get the part of making a filter in a plain spawnbag.
Might be the language, but can you explain so I get it?

You punch holes in the bag, then you make a line of glue ( like a perimeter) around the pattern of holes then place a cut out piece of tyvek filter material ( aka: micron filters, filter discs) over the glue.

Clothes pins. Maybe you can find something better. It's all about experimentation. That's how you learn. Think things out, it's all trial and error. And read the F.A.Q. , seriously, it has much of what you need to know.

Before PC,ing place 2 or 3 metal paper clips to hold bag lip opening shut.

Fold bag lip opening over twice & wrap 2 rubber bands around bag to hold top down.

Stream can still escape, while PC,ing.

Once PC'ed, allow to cool in PC.

Remove bag in as clean of conditions possible.

WHEN READY, remove rubber bands & paper clips.

Use any good Scotch brand 2 inch wide heavy duty CLEAR storage tape.

Use gloved finger to alc swab bag lip & tape (allow to evap for a moment).

Apply tape so half inch extends beyond bag sides & half inch above.

Take second alc swabbed strip of tape & apply facing existing tape on bag already. CREATES DOUBLE CONTACT SEAL.

ON FLAT SURFACE - SEAL FIRMLY WITH FINGER PRESSURE ALL AROUND TAPE.

FOLD TOP OVER & DOUBLE TAPE BAG CORNERS(after sealing)with 4 inch strips (2 inches on each side of bag). This keeps gussets from spreading & allowing air in

Bingo............it's sealed

Folding is more tight than twisiting.

Colonized manure in taped shut bag.

Hell, you can seal bags with heavy cotton/poly type twine, just tie good knot & pull very hard.

If you doubt that, blow one up, tie top with twine in knot & pull very HARD.

Then squeeze it until it bursts. Seam will burst before air escapes though knot.

Wise to use CABLE TIE just below where you knot - first.

I don?t know what mil thickness your autoclave bag was, or manufacturer of it. But, the RED Permatex high temp RTV silicone GASKET MAKER works on UNICORN BAGS. If bag surface is so slick it feels greasy, suggest you buff surface very lightly with very fine grit sandpaper, or pumice stone, before application. UNICORN BAG minimum order is 1000 + shipping.

I would like to do that, do you guys use specail bags, or can i just slap on a tyvek pach to any oven bag type heat resistant bag and use that.

Any reason why i couldnt do the

ooo
ooo
ooo

thing and tape poly-fill over it if i make sure all the holes are covered with like a inch of the poly fil?

POLYFIL would NOT WORK in this fashion.

BAGS are AUTOCLAVE BAGS, not OVEN BAGS

Without being argumentative, I would like to ask why.
You say it wont work, but back it up with no logic.

Seems to me if it allows for air exchange, and keeps out contams, it will work. I don't have any exp with bags but my 1337 common sense tells me that it will do both of those things.

Imagine this i take a autoclave bag and prepare dung/straw and poke 9 needle holes in the bag, in the way you described, and carefully put 1 inch of poly fill on top of my 9 hole pattern, and securely tape it with heat resistant tape without making an air tight seal. And i could put that bag inside another bag and seal it shut to keep out water during pasteurization/sterilization.

I am 100% positive that will work.

Edit: and also i will try it, and i will post pictures of what happens, failure or not.

Or this for polyfil:

Polyfil is stringy and cottany and wouldnt stand to all the movment bags take like tyvek would if you just glued a big square to the side of a bag.

IMHO It does not have as many places to hide and lurk waiting for the right opportunity to lunge forward and destroy all your hard work . :mad2:

Agar have you ever tried using any medical grade wound patches to do the same ?
Kinda like the way many bag manufacurers do with gas exchange ports\patches . I ask because I have access to lots of that type of stuff .
Oh shit who am I kidding... to f'ing lazy, easier just to buy them pre done

I'm a Tyvek man myself, polyfil works great for FAE in fruiting chambers but for all my hard work Tyvek has proven itself over and over again. scatmanrav's idea could easily incorperate the Tyvek I'm sure
