Alright....got a new router/modem.....got my computer hooked up and online....my computer is in LAN 1............

Now i plug another computer up to LAN 2..... how do i get it to recognize the internet connection from the router??

Windows 98 wizard was no help......the router came with basically no directions or manuals.......

its a zoom x5 modem

sorry for the lame question....but im totally lost here

Do i have to set my comp up as network server or something?? shouldnt the router be the server?????

ok so you hook it up like this

Cable modem -> Router (connect it to the internet port)
Computer 1 -> Router port 1
Computer 2 -> Router port 2

do you have it hooked up like that?

if you got the router used, restore the factory settings

otherwise make sure your computer is set to automatically obtain ip and dns info; control panel/networking

unplug the cable modem and router then plug them back in, restart the computer and see if it works

What kind of connection do you have?

DSL, Cable, what?

If you have DSL, do you need a password to connect?

What brand of router is it?

Most routers will automatically have the IP of 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1, put that IP into a web browser, and you'll get a screen to login to the router. If none of those IPs work, *READ THE INSTRUCTIONS* (This should go without saying, but you'd be suprised how few people actually think of this).

When you get the login screen, you'll need to put in the username/password for the router. This will located *IN THE INSTRUCTIONS*.

If you've got cable, you're probably connecting using DHCP, so if that's the case, you want to make sure that somewhere in the settings, that's what it's set to. Sometimes they use cutesy little codes like "Obtain an IP automatically".

If you're using DSL, and you need a password to connect, you'll probably need to set it to PPPoE instead of DHCP, and you'll need to put in your username and password.

Once you've done that, there will be something in there telling you about the status of the router, this should tell you if it's connected or not. If it is, you should be good to go, and you'll be able to plug more computers into the router, and they should be able to work fine. If they don't work, it's most likely a problem on that computer, and not on the router.

If your running 2 different os's make sure they are listed in the same workgroup.. IE: MSHome... I think 98's default is workgroup... Change it to MSHome..

??

I'm sorta lost here.
If you have DSL, set it to PPPOE, and put in the ID/password.
If there's an 'idle time disconnect' put it to unlimited (usualy '0').
Enable DHCP.  This will make your router have its own internal IP range (which you can usualy set), something like 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199
This makes your Router a DHCP server for your computers.  An IP between that range is usualy assigned automaticaly to each computer.... but you can also manualy set it.

What happens with this setup, is it leaves your router connected to the net at all times. Then you can shut off whatever PC and ass soon as you boot, bam, youre connected.

btw, the default password for 192.168.0.1 (router setup) is usualy just ID:admin Pass: [blank]
You can search up your model # online if you dont have your manual.

Have fun.

On both computers do this for us:

1. Click start
2. Click run
3. Type "command" (without the quotations) and hit enter
4. At the command prompt type "ipconfig /all"

Tell us what the results are on both computers.

The router should have its own DHCP server enabled by default.

I was just saying, most of the time you're assigned an IP by DHCP from your ISP if you have cable.
