Bulk mix discussion
    #3471005 - 12/09/04 04:17 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

The bulk mix that I am planning on using right now consists of
2 parts straw, 4 parts composted manure, 1 part verm.

I didn't pull this from anywhere so it could be completely wack, but my logic behind it was:
A) poo is good, gotta have poo
B) straw is commonly used, and a must have for aeration
C) add a little verm for some water retension, so I can try and get 3 flushes out this bitch

I have 2 concerns:

1) Is the vermiculite addition a good idea, or is it stupid overkill/not necessary?

2) Straw. I don't want to use it. I don't want it all over my apartment. It's incredibly susceptible to contamination and I imagine that it putters out on nutes quickly. But, it's a must have for aeration and routes for the myc to colonize along. What can I use as an ample substitute for straw in a bulk mix?

What bulk mixes do you guys use?
Does anyone absolutely advocate the use of straw?

i think that if you mix poo with straw it is harder to contam than just regular straw. this is what i get from reading growlogs but i have no actual experience with it. a word of caution on the composted manure, i tried some but it never colonized apparetnly because of antifungal agents used to treat the grain the cows ate.

Yep, but I checked into it with the company who said there were no anti fungal agents fed to the cows, and I also ran a test run and got myc.

I'm actually headed up the the state horse farm once this rain quits to get some real horse poo, so that's probably what I'm going to use in the same proportion.

As far as the poo adding protection from contamination, I'm not sure about that, but I read all over to put a top layer of just poo/spawn on top of the poo/straw/spawn mix so that no straw is exposed if you rip of some of the casing layer during harvest.

if you get horse poo from a stable thats the best shit usually cause it has straw and shit in it allready which is great for airation butt....
If you have shit ready to go use 2 parts shit and 1 part course verm and that will get both airation and moister.
Trust me I know
