why wont humidity go above 77%
    #3469569 - 12/09/04 08:53 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

have a friend who is using perlite in a searlite container.(27L) he has about 1 inch of perlite which is wet...the humidity is not going above 77%, i thought that the meter could be off but there is some myc growing on the stems of some of the shrooms which (if i'm not mistaken indicates low humidity). he has no airstones just perlite. what can he do to increase...why do others who have this setup have RH's in the 90's and he doesn't. should he add a dry layer of perlite to the already wet perlite and hope that the wick effect will work better than the wet perlite alone?

thanks guys/girls

Welcome to the shroomery .
Do not trust cheapo hygrometers they lie !
Myc growing off of stems is sign of high humidity.
Misting with a mister bottle is a way of adding humidity , just mist walls and lid of chamber and you are good to go .
Hope this helps , do some research in the archives and such about maintaing humidity .There is lots to read on that topic .
GOOD LUCK !

thank you both for your replies. going to recommend a better hygrometer. and if that still shows low RH then I will recommend adding more perlite to the sides. I guess i had the idea of myc growing off stems backwards.....thanx TND

without a pump, you're going to be fanning alot and that can keep your humidity down.

2 inches perlite, 1-1.25 inches water.

cheapo hygrometers suck, and some hygrometers go haywire after a while in high humidity.

You can also try to calibrate your hygrometer:

Calibration

And, if possible, adjust it if it isn't correct.

The problem with that is its only 75%...hygrometers will often be accurate up to 80% and then either be inaccurate or just stop reading (sometimes a little less). The salt test could still work on a shitty hygrometer.
