The Pink

I've seen this before and remember it as innocuous. That is to say, the jars fruited. The mycelia invitro is pastel pink in color. Any thoughts or experience?

And now it's turning purple where it's the densest. Still, the mycelia is winning. Anyone?

I seen a LITTLE bit of that on a couple of my cakes that I just recently cased... it didn't get any larger than it was the second day it had appeared for me though. It was a very light pink, about 1/2 inch long and 1/2cm wide. not big and it looked like the mycelium was handling it fine if it was a contam. Someone stated that it could just be excrement form the mycelium or something. When I cased my cakes I just broke off the pink stuff. Mine was towards the bottom of the jar also... it was only on 2 of my cakes, one was just a very very small area and the other was the 1/2 inch x 1/2cm area. Dunno, I'll tell you if I die : )~

Are you looking for a diagnosis? That's tough without microscopy. Mucor spp. can be purplish, but will usually take over a cake [very fast growing]. There are hundreds of other possibilities, the vast majority inocuous [if not colonizing a big part of the cake]

Well, I ended up dumping most of the jars. I'll grow out a few and see how they do. Thanks for your comments.

Heh! I ended up making a major 12 cake casing with the 1/2 colonized jars. Couldn't bear to just toss 'em.
