My Xmas List ( aka It's time for a new PC)

Well, after squeezing the last few gigs outta my pentium 4 2.0a, overclocked to 2.4gig, I feel it's time to up the ante.
My works-ok Gf4 ti4200 will go back in this box (p4 2.4gig, 256mb pc2100 DDR, 80 and 40 gig hdds). Also, the DVD burner will come out of the box. And screw the idea of using my peltier junction for cooling... The output of this northwood proc is minimum 80 watts, the peltier moves 25 watts max.
On to the fun stuff.
The parents are happy with me, maybe it's actually keeping with not getting high daily and fucking up my life.
I'm expecting an abit ai7 guru motherboard with a p4 prescott 3.2gig proc, 800mhz fsb (QP), and 1mb of level 2 cache.
I'll be buying one 512mb stick of pc4200 ram for the works.
I'm eyeing a Koolance case. We have one at work that someone gave us, I got to keep the radiator, pump, and copperblock so that extra copperblock will come in handy for cooling my GPU (ati radeon 9600)
And, beings that the motherboard supports SATA and RAID, I'll be shooting for two 300gig SATA hard drives (provided I can afford it), and given that WinXP may support a single 600gig partition, that's what the system will use. I probably won't go to that extreme though, since I have a dvd burner.
That should be a good baseline system for me. I've been using this system for over two years without a hitch, but with movie downloading, lots of extracting from compressed files, and burning dvd's, I'll certainly need the added speed.
My goal is to overclock the prescott to at least 3.7gig. I hear higher is possible, and with watercooling I'm sure I could add some core voltage.
Future upgrades, depending on money flow, will include an ide flash adapter with a 512mb or 1gig flash adapter. This will serve as a paging file.
This pc should last another long strech of two years provided I don't blow out the cpu from overclocking. But heat won't be an issue.

i just ordered a new laptop - and got my work to pay for it! p4 2.8 ghz, 2*512 RAM - getting it custom built by some company out of Los Alamos - going to be running half-linux (mandrake 10.0) and half winXP. i feel like such a materialistic bastard, but i can't wait for this shit to arrive... (except that once it arrives i have to config apache, mysql, etc.. it's going to be a pain in the ass).

You should get two sticks of ram so you can take advantage of the dual channel mobo.

dude, this is just me...but if i were you, i would go with the 64-bit AMD with maybe a gigabyte motherboard. Take full advantage of on-board raid and the 4 IDE channels to hook up 4 80 gig drives for a total of 320 gigs. Gigabyte has a dual channel memory setup so you can get 1 gig of 400 MHz DDR (2 512M sticks) and you are set with your processor and storage capabilities.

Why would you want a single 600 GB partition? I'm surprised someone like you wouldnt know the grand rule of 'make small boot drive partition, use 2nd as storage'... Stressing an HD for 2 years doesn't compare to losing it ALL to 1 stupid virus. I've been killing mine for at least 5 years now... no problems yet.
You dont need to cool your R9600 dude. My R9600 PRO is OC'd from 400/300 to 500/365, stock cooling. And its not even warm. Remember that the 9600 and 9800 are built on smaller microns that run a LOT cooler. I think that was one of the bonuses of buying the 9600pro...it oc'd like a bitch straight outta the box.
I agree, go with dual channel RAM.
