Filtering air in air pump?
    #3467740 - 12/09/04 12:05 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Afoaf has a small, cheap air pump from wal-mart. He was wondering, what is a cheap and easy method to filtering the air that goes through the pump in order to keep a PMP relatively contam free?

In line fuel filter is about 5 micron & easy to install.

(think auto parts store)

In line Hepa grade filters are out there, but much more SPENDY.

You should be able to buy carbon filters for the pump mine came with it, if its a standard fish tank pump that is.. here's a pic...

that in a tub of water should provide nice humidity and air exchange.. expecially on a timer! because then its maintenance free!

How do you rig up a timer? Afoaf seen them at wal-mart also but am unfamiliar with how to use them.

Activated charcoal/carbon filters only absorb SOME foul gasses, not even all. It doesn't act as a barrier filter.

Hi,

About a year ago I built a photsynthetic hydrogen reactor for an art show. One trouble was introducing sterile air to the culture inexpensively. I found some 0.2um air filters (can't remember the maker of the supplier but I could check the box at work on Mon.) that are designed as in-line filters. About the only thing that should go through them are viruses. They are autoclavable and came in a ten pack. I think they worked out to about $10 a piece. Pricey but really not too bad and they got the job done. Good luck. Another (maybe silly) idea is to put your air pump in a container fitted with a small uv light. This way any air pulled into the container would be quasi treated. There would be a lot of variables like flow rate and such, but coupled with the fuel filter you might get decent filtration.

I find the easiest way for me to filter the air for a pump is to put the pump in a small plastic bin, and cut a piece out of the lid and cover the newly made hole with a hepa filter disc.
I have wondered if Tyvek would even be suitable!
