Give this n00b some advice on hunting
    #3467710 - 12/08/04 11:59 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Yep, the noob is me. I'm no stranger to tripping but in December a buddy and me are going to drive down to Florida and stop by a couple fields to see what we might find. Now I know a few "basic" identifiers such as bruising blue, they have a veil, etc... I mean I've seen shrooms many times before. But I'm sure there is a LOT more to it than this. The last thing I want is to eat some shrooms expecting a trip and then get poisoned.

I have been told there are many excellent books that can serve as a field guide, could someone reccommend one to me?

Any info at all on what I need to learn would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Not much to say on this. Stamet's book Psilocybes of the World is pretty good. But if you know what a cube looks like, I doubt you'll confuse it with other shrooms that are found in FL. Problem may be finding them there in December. I find them here (Louisiana) in December, but I know people in FL that say finding them that time of year is rare. Anyhow, good luck to you.

The audobon society's mushroom field guide, psilocybin mushrooms of the world, mushrooms demystified, these are all really good books. My best advice to u is to go out and hunt. Use the markers you already know and after you find some postem here and the IDers can help u. U able to get on the net where your goin?

I highly doubt it... you know what supernova, in that case we'll just go down to Loisiana then!  Why go somewhere we wont find any?

So other than bruising blue are there any other "golden rules"?

Take pictures and show them to us along with a legit description. We would be glad to identify anything you find.

A gilled mushroom that drops purple-brown spore prints AND bruises blue is most likely active. As with all mushrooms, it's better that you get a 100% ID prior to eating anything.
