Jesus the Mythical Character
    #3467400 - 12/08/04 11:00 PM (12 years, 12 hours ago)

Basically, religion=mythology. Nothing more too it. Mythology evolves, taking bits from older mythology and adapting it to make a "new" myth. Take Jesus for example.

Quote:

Stories from the life of Horus had been circulating for centuries before Jesus birth (circa 4 to 7 BCE). If any copying occurred by the writers of the Egyptian or Christian religions, it was the followers of Jesus who incorporated into his biography the myths and legends of Horus, not vice-versa.

According to author and theologian Tom Harpur: "[Author Gerald] Massey discovered nearly two hundred instances of immediate correspondence between the mythical Egyptian material and the allegedly historical Christian writings about Jesus. Horus indeed was the archetypal Pagan Christ." 7

That link gives at least 35 ways that the mythical character of Jesus was copied from the Egyptian mythical character Horus. I haven't read too much about this yet, but from what I've picked up Christianity has copied most of Jesus' characterstics, teachings, etc. from Paganism, and some other religions that were dominant in the area at that time. I still cannot understand what drives people to believe mythology as "fact", and live by it....

All religion. From the very first, undocumented religions of man, to the ones humanity still clings to today. Any religion is just mythology. It's equatable to believing in the tooth fairy. It's just a story that you're told when you're young. You obviously grow out of the tooth fairy lie, so why don't people grow out of the mythology?

I took a mythology class once, and though I was too stoned every day to remember what stories we read, I know that every single myth in that class was at one time a religion of one society or another. The religion of ancient Egypt is now regarded as mythology. So if Christianity has "borrowed" (copied) characteristics from a mythological character to make up their own "messiah", that character(Jesus) can now be regarded as a myth.

that could be a pretty big if.
that doesn't mean its all not true or mythological.

Taking a class in mythology only means you've taken a class in mythology.

So, of the thousands of religions man has gone through, which are now classified as mythology, you are saying: "What if this one is true?" I guess it's true: Man learns nothing from history.

Thank you for clarifying that. Because what I really meant was by taking a class in mythology I have actually earned a doctorate in mythology and religion.

I forgot to add that I was born with the ability to think logically, which, fortunately, has not been clouded by blind beliefs in fairy tales, err, religion....

Strange, I've never heard a Mythology professor ever use the word "fairy tale" to further his point.
