 Actives and Horses

Last night I went searching in a couple horse pastures looking for some active mushrooms. I found many mushrooms but none of them were active.
Do actives grow in horse pastures and if they do is it directly out of manure or where manure was at one time?

My first question to you would be... Where are you located- cause that will answer your questions off the bat..
Yes actives do grow in horse pastures (ie. cubes, subbs,.. and copes maybe im not sure tho) directly and where it used to be- look in clumps of grass- they love to hide from prying eyes

I live in South Florida
All the inactives i found were hidden under clumps of grass I had to move the grass out of the way to get a good look at them

Yes they do. But it is considered by some a rare event. Finding Panaeolus subbalteatus in horse manure seems to be pretty common. Finding Psilocybe cubensis in horse manure isn't too likely but does happen.

I just found two mushrooms tonight in a horse pasture. They were cubes and they are blueing really nicely right now...I just ate a stem just to see if it will effect me at all.

You should take it out of the plastic baggy...it will degrade. That and 1 cube stem isn't going to do anything at all. You're gonna need more like 30 grams wet to start tripping moderatly.

Woah dude, no way. 15 g wet will be a pretty intense trip. 30g wet would just be way too much.

Cubensis mushrooms love horse manure but the manure clumps are too small for good growth.
Try to find where they pile the manure and hay cleaned from the barn. That's your best bet with horses, piles of horse poo with straw that they used for bedding are nice habitat for mushrooms!

Does the plastic baggy really degrade it?
I have it sitting out on a piece of paper towel now in a dark cabinet.
I plan on eating the piece around 12.

Mushrooms are alive and need to breath. If you put them in plastic bags they will suffocate and die. Once they die they begin to rot.
If you want to save fresh mushrooms instead of drying them, try putting them in a paper lunch bag inside the vegetable crisper of your refrigerator. They will be good for up to a week. If you want to keep them longer you should dry them.

hey, i live in north carolina, and was wondering, will those grow in my horses shit to? i've seen some in them but never really though of it, also how would i tell if its active?

Yes horse dung has been recorded as a substrate for some actives. However, Just because a mushroom grows from horse dung, or any dung, doesn't mean they are active or edible. A good way to tell if a 'room is active is to take a spore print, measure and record data to exhibit, for the experienced shroomers in this forum. Make sure to give a good detailed description, and good pictures help alot.

You can find Panaeolus subbalteatus growing from horse dung in
Cali. Cubensis do not grow in Cali though.
