were doing the pf tek in half pint jars, today we checked the jars and one of them has a mushroom a little over half an inch tall and a couple more starting, and there is about an inch twoards the bottom that isnt colonized and it just needs to get a little thicker on a little part on the top. what should we do?

let them grow invitro, birth them when they are too large for the jar to contain or the cake is 100% colonized

Just let em grow right outta the jar. Open it up and leave the open side up for the mushrooms to grow out of.

He must have checked on them often, i read somewhere that said half a millisecond of light per day can trigger pinning.

There's your problem
Colonizing jars should be in complete darkness if possible because light is one of the 3 things that triggers pinning (The others being drop in temperature and higher humidity I think).
Hmm.. hope things work out for you guys.

Actually for some that's not a problem at all, hippie3's invitro tek calls for light throughout the colonization period so that pins will form.
I introduce light to my jars @ 80-90% so that i have pins ready to go on my birthday.

Would this require them to grow/ continue to colonize in a sealed sterile environment, such as a glove box?

Do those "Cool Light" fluros suffice for that part of the spectrum?

the way we have it is they are in a 10 g. terrarium and are on a heating pad, and a light is on above them, we had them covered up. im not quite sure why they werent covered anymore. we covered them back up. except for that one, we got that far and it only has a little more to colonize so no point in really covering that one back up.

Yea, giving them light when they're 80% colonized isnt such a bad idea but light 24/7 right after you knock em up isnt really smart, they'd pin way to early and have a lot of uncolonized cake left.Gl and happy growing...

If you want to grow shrooms in-vitro, just let them grow in the half pint jar, they will smash up against the jar and form to crazy shapes all flat and junk. When all the shrooms look pretty big, birth the cake and pick your shrooms, and return the cake to the jar, or dunk, and put into a fruiting chamber.

For those that want to be really scientific then...Actinic Blue lights used in saltwater aquariums peak at 420 nanometers. Perfect for initiating pinning. Invertibrates on the reefs also require this color of light, plus it just makes the fish look really cool.
