Rating People
    #3465239 - 12/08/04 05:00 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I do not rate anyone anymore (it has been years) as I see no purpose to it except when it comes to trading spores and supplies. Mostly it comes off as vengeful grade-school shit. "You pissed me off and so I will slam you." Even the inverse, "You agreed with me therefore you MUST be a great person," is no better, even though it appears so.

Hue just said nearly the same thing in the "Community Property" thread.

Many have a hard-time grasping that personalities have nothing to do with philosophy and the search for truth.

Does anyone see any validity for such a system?

I do it to spread happiness in a very very small way

I agree that it means nothing, but everything means nothing

If I think a poster, especially someone new here (who likes having 'not rated' displayed?) posts something that I think is very well-written and 'wise', it is a way of saying 'kudos'

means nothing of course

The ultimate purpose of this site is not "philosophy and the search for truth", but the exchange of mushroom-related information. Since anyone can say anything here, the ratings system (and, to a lesser extent, the post count) is mainly to put weight behind accurate information and make less accurate information identifiable.

In the end, though, ratings are just a collection of peoples' oppinions about one another, and don't mean much in aggregate.

People usually give others bad shroomage when someone spreads false or dangerous information. Sometimes people use it as you say swami, but I think it's a waste of time to even care if it REALLY is a useless system. I think it's for fun more than anything.

We have a community hot tub here that is open when the outdoor temperature hits 114F, but they close it in the fall and winter when its really enjoyable. Doh!

I try NOT to give a poor rating on not agreeing with me but I have for insults before. In general I agree with you...it is not relevant.

I can certainly understand people's reasons for not liking the ratings system, but I find it can tell me quite a bit about a person based on what others have said. I can tell even more about someone by the ratings they've given out. Now, ultimately it is a popularity contest for the most part, but still, I don't see much harm in it. Plus, if I think negatively of someone, but they have high ratings, I can see what others say about them, and try and see it from their perspective. What I don't like are the ratings threads in the Pub where people rate each other just for posting in the thread. I think one's rating of someone should reflect their actual outlook on them. And for the record, I almost never rate someone based solely on whether they agree with me or not.

It's really just as useless as many other features if you just include it in the context of pure philosophy, such as our signatures, our locations, our registration date, avatars, the use of smileys, etc. If you want to discuss philosophy then you need none of these, perhaps not even a name, just assigned numbers, and we could still accomplish all the same threads and posts with less distraction

It is mostly a superficial commodity to make an illusion of a deeper connection with these anonymous people, and ratings are just another aspect of that, in that you can look at what people think of them and then see the result of this popularity contest

WHAT? No smileys?

If you want to discuss philosophy then you need none of these, perhaps not even a name, just assigned numbers...

This new guy goes to prison and during dinner someone shouts out "61!" and a bunch of inmates guffaw. Later, after lights out, another shouts "172!" and hysterical laughter ripples down the line. Puzzled, he asks his cellmate what's going on. The cellmate tells him that everyone had memorized a few hundred jokes and would tell them by using the reference number.

So for the next few months, the newbie spend time memorizing the list of jokes. Out in the exercise yard, he tries out the funniest one by shouting out "46!" A silence falls over the crowd. Red-faced, he quickly shifts to a different one, "19!" he yells. Cons shoot dark looks his way.

Puzzled he asks the cellmate what he did wrong as he thought they were real rib-ticklers. "Jesus", replies the cellmate "everyone knows it's not the joke, it's the way you tell it."
