What about Delicatessen? Alot of the same cast as Amelie. One of the funniest films I've ever seen.

I really liked 37 degrees in the shade (or betty blue - named differently in different countries) and "the relationship" was also good. Yeah the French make great films. Saw some film about a perverted piano teacher recently, though, and that wasn't so good.

If anyone here has seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and liked it... it is quite psychedelic), I'd like to stress out that, even if the script comes from Charlie Kauffman, it is directed by Michel Gondry, who is french.

I'm french too, and as far as i'm concerned I think Amelie is full of stereotypes and clich?s, but it's good anyway. Not one of my favorites, though : the rest of the work of Jeunet is great, remember he made Alien Resurrection...

Eternal Sunshine was magnificient because of the combination of kauffman AND gondry. i was a fan of gondry even before this just for his music videos. for those who don't know, he did the white stripes videos, the psychedelic Chemical Bros video 'Let forever be', and the Bjork videos.

Amelie is easily in my top ten, i loved it. i can see why some might view it as cliche, but i thought it pulled it off.

I thought Red Siren was pretty awful, the film equivalent of euro-pop. The storyline was a pretty blatant knock-off of Leon with lots of clich?d characters and none of it's humour. By-the-numbers all the way.

I can get behind the other suggestions though, I loved Amelie and Delicatessen (City of Lost Children is part of my DVD collection). La Jet?e was also another one that I enjoyed (it inspired 12 Monkeys which is one of my favourite films). The Triplets of Bellville is an animation that I think people here would like.

The Battle of Algiers is also quite interesting, although I'm not sure if it qualifies as a 'French' movie (although a lot of the dialogue appears to be in French). It was banned in France for a number of years and having watched it recently I couldn't help but compare the film to the current state of Iraq.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.
