Lepista nuda?
    #3463457 - 12/08/04 08:48 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

The sporeprint is like cream-pink, the flesh breaks easy like russulas or lactarius, gills are easy to tear apart as well as the skin of the cap which becomes transparent with water. Caps are between 5-15 cm. Smells fungi like and a little bit fruity. Tastes the same. The base of the stem is bulbous. The stem is small if compared with the cap, but full and fat. The stem does not have any ring?. Found them in conifers humus, many of them were freezed when found. Very easy to pick them whole without the help of any knife.
I thought they could be some type of cortinarius, but there is no veil, not even in primordia.

So, do you think it?s save to eat? You know, I?m no expert hunting and don?t want to risk my life or anything.

Thanks a lot.

Yep, that's a Blewit.

The lack of veil and spore color rules out Cortinarius.

Yep, safe to eat. I don't care for the texture or taste when cooked fresh but I've heard theyre not bad when dried and reconstituted.

I highly reccomend playing around with them- once you learn how you like to use them and thus how to properly prepare them they have a unique flavor I think. Nice to see them out somewhere.

After the overall purplish color, the thing to verify (which you already have) is the spore print color. The similar mushrooms you need to avoid will all have brown to rusty brown spore prints (Inocybe and Cortinarius). Having verified the spore print color you can be 100% certain (in North America) that you're not going to eat something poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!

Well, these were found in Spain (Europe), but all I?ve read about it concerning spanish shrooms, points out the possibility of confusing lepista nuda with 2 type of cortinarius, not poisonous but lower in gourmet quality (Cortinarius glaucopus and Cortinarius purpurascens) both with brownish spores in mass.

Thanks a lot, will have a nice dinner tonight!!!!

The spore print color rules out all the Cortinarius species.

There are a *lot* more than just two Cortinarius species that could easily be confused with Blewits. A large percentage of the species in subgenus Sericeocybe would qualify, and that's a lot of species.

As far as eating Cortinarius species, I follow the recommendation of Dr. Meinhard Moser, until his recent death the world authority on the genus. He gave a lecture here in Colorado in 1997 on the genus and, when asked about the edibility of Cortinarius in general replied that he wouldn't eat any of them.

Happy mushrooming!

I've tried them fried in butter and in numerous cream sauces (stroganoff etc.) and wasn't that keen. How do you prepare them?

Are the gills notched before they attach to the stalk? This usually confirms ID, as well as the sweet smell.

I use them in a sort of egg salad. They add not only color but texture. Similarly they work well if you steam them first. This changes the end result- then drain WELL-then fry at will. Cheers, friend.

Something that may be too late to try, but I'd recommend to anyone who has obtained blewitts; Take a chunk of fresh flesh [non-refrigerated], crush it between your fingers, and smell. . .to me and others it rings of 'orange juice concentrate'! Pretty cool. It loses this aspect significantly after cooking or drying [but is still tasty].

Finally I ate a few of them and fried in pure virgin spanish olive oil. They tasted really well!!!

Now, I?m drying some in front of a cool air fan for later use:

And another amount is sitting on olive oil with black pepper grains and a laurel leaf:

This is a spanish recipe as far as I know.

be careful with blewits, many people have severe allergic reactions to this mushroom. when you delve into the use of these in cooking, you must consider your company. you can try a small ammount on yourself to see if youre sensitive to blewitts, but it may be different for others. a test with a small ammount is usually suggested in most picking guides
