Fresh picked mushrooms give you worms?
    #3461885 - 12/07/04 09:09 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Recently a friend of mine was talking about picking cyans in oregon. He was telling me about how he would never eat a fresh mushroom. He would always dry them before consumption.

He claimed that fresh picked mushrooms will give you worms, which you will shit out for the weeks following. Parasitic worms. From mushrooms.

Bullshit?

I hope so.

Any feedback would be great

well anything is posible but ive never heard of this. i would think there to be worse odds of getting them from the actual picking and hunting of the shroom than the eating. you know cause your hands are in shit and such.

I've never heard one case of it before in my life. Is it possible? Who knows.

I read another thread about it. It is possible.

It's probably possible, but most of us eat apples knowing that there's a chance a worm will be in it, or a banana.. worms are just a fact of life.

If you watch discovery channel, you might stumble upon a show that goes into people's houses, every day people and rich people. The rich people have just as many, if not MORE bugs in their food and house. You eat more little bugs than you think, probably entire mouth full sized bites of them at times without knowing.

A little worm could potentially cause you some harm I suppose, but more often then not, someone who's relatively intelligent won't be just eating them in the field. I would more than likely go home and cut them open and give them one last look over to be sure I'm identifying them right.

I'm just saying, worms are a problem with all organic food and fruit. It's a fact of life. Just like fruit flies.

I'm assuming the types of "worms" he is talking about are parasites. I promise you get parasites all the time from eating wild shrooms. Your body will take care of destroying most if not all of them. Most of the ones that can cause real problems are going to be dealt with by your stomach acid. Someone asked about liver flukes a while back and I posted how those can be picked up from mushrooms. Chances are very remote though. If you are worried, just boil them. Personally, I wouldn't give it a lot of worry. As far as non-parasitic worms go, they are disgusting but aren't likely to hurt you. I toss mushrooms that have worms. The parasitic kind you'll never see because what you usually ingest are the eggs, which are nearly microscopic. The normal kind will be wiggling around, and that's just fucking too gross for me to eat.

Not true.

This came from an experienced friend of mine, a veteran of many trips, long before I even knew about them.

I asked him about it again, and he says that he has gotten the worms, and he knows people who have also gotten the worms.  Appparently the eggs hatch in your intestine, so you crap out little white worms.

I can see how it is possible, but not all that harmful.  If you were really scared of parasitic worms, just eat some peppers or take bio-available oxygen.  I do.  I've seen what can come from my colon. It is not pretty, but I AM glad it is no longer inside of me.  (Usually everyone has between 5 to 15 pounds of impacted waste in their colon that isn't going anywhere.  When Clint Eastwood died, they removed 50 POUNDS of the stuff from his colon.  FIFTY POUNDS!) a little off topic, but what the hell,

Thanks for the feedback!

yeah I know of a couple of diseases that can fuck up your bowels. I know of some people that probably have a lot more than 50 lbs inside them. Worms from fresh shrooms, ya learn something new everyday. If your friend had them I believe it.........ya gotta admit it sounds like something an anti-drug person would say though.

ive lived in warrenton oregon in the past. this IS the cyan/azur capitol. the locals warned of this also. it didnt stop them from eating them right outta the ground. ive never had a worm crawl outta my ass and ive eaten tons of those lil beaties. altough i do feel like im eating for about 1000 sometimes. who cares if you get a tape worm, think of it as a diet, weight lose. some people should get worms.....

Sorry but Clint Eastwood?  He is not dead.  And why would someone dig out impacted feces from a dead person's colon and weigh it? Weird!

But yeah I've heard about the impacted shit in your colon that just sticks there. I've seen pictures of it- it's fucking nasty! That's what can cause colon cancer and other intestinal problems. It can usually be helped though, by eating lots of fruits and vegetables.  Sorry to continue off topic......

anyway, when afoaf tried growing shrooms outside, her experiment was infested by little worms. Ugh. Also I recall mjshroomer doing a little report on mushroom worms in Thailand with pictures awhile back but have never heard of them surviving digestion.  There is definitley something to be said for shrooms grown indoors!

I got parasitic worms once, don't know from what. I just had to take a deworming medicine which was one pill and then another one two weeks later, like you give to your cat or dog. I was freaked out but the pharmacist said it's actually pretty common, apparently little kids get them all the time from playing in the sandbox and stuff. They made my butt itch, though, and I was hungry all the time. I saw a show on BBC about parasites that was the scariest thing I ever saw, all about worms in your brain and eyes and stuff.

The itching is from the worms wiggling their way out of your butthole. Serious. I got them when I was a kid more than once. Nasty.

yeah it makes me question some of the larve that are in amanita sometimes, thats pretty much the only reason i would suggest cooking me over fresh or if you want to make a tastey meal with em of course. When drying them if it has those buggers the thing will rot and you will see them crawling out like wtf were gona die
