Death Cap' Mushroom Leaves One Dead

A dangerous type of mushroom growing wild in the Bay Area has left one person dead and three others seriously ill.

Alameda County Health officials say the victims picked the so-called "death cap" mushrooms over the holiday weekend somewhere in the Oakland Hills. All four were hospitalized two days later, and one died Monday afternoon.

The wet weather has produced an explosion of mushrooms, and health officials say you should never take a chance with the fungi.

"It's just taking unnecessary risks to harvest wild mushrooms for consumption when you don't know exactly what you are doing," said Dr. Anthony Iton of the Alameda County Health Department. "This is a devastating illness."

Despite frequent warnings about wild mushrooms, there have been more than 900 cases of mushroom poisoning reported statewide so far this year.

A little over a week old but still a good reminder, be careful out there folks. Know your mushrooms and stay safe.

I'm sorry, but I have no pity for someone dumb enough to eat a wild mushroom without any proper identification. If it wasnt the mushroom that killed him, surely he would have died not too long after from sticking a fork in an electrical socket, or perhaps decapitation by a weed-wacker.

that's very insensitive and uncool. maybe if it was somebody you know you'd think a little differently. yes, it is stupid to do that and i can't conceive it myself, but dude, have a heart...somebody's family and friends are mourning the loss of a loved one and that's nothing short of a shitty thing.

They wernt kids they were immigrants from like asia or something like that. There are edible varieties of Amanita where they came from that look just like the Deathcaps. Because they were unexperienced with the different varieties of mushroom that grow here they mistaked the Deathcap for the edible variety that they piked over seas. Its really a sad thing. And just goes to show no matter how experienced you think you are there can allways be mistakes. Safe Hunting everyone. ID everything you consume!

The victims were four southeast Asians. The one who died was a 70 year old woman. She died last Monday (Nov 29). The mushrooms eaten were Amanita phalloides. These people probably thought they were large versions of a Volvariella that is widely cultivated in southeast Asia.

The problem in this case that we should remember is that your mushroom knowledge declines in usefulness rapidly as you go farther from where you normally hunt. In particular, if you go to another continent you are back to being a noob. Even going from the east coast to the west coast (or vice versa) in the US you will find a lot of different mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!
