Do u need PC for Popcorn? Also, need experts' advice...
    #3459398 - 12/07/04 11:50 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I just inoculated my very first batch ever. Unfortunately, the BRF and vermiculite gunk got caught in the syringe needle every single time, so that was a pain in the ass, and caused me to waste some spore-water. I inoculated 5 half pints with about 11cc of Cambodian, and then 3 with PESA. I plan on casing the cambodian, and if all of the PESA survive, i'll probably case them too, if 1 doesn't ill have to cake them.

Next time I order syringes, I'm gonna order 2 or 3 of the same strain so everyone gets the same treatment.

The reason I ask if you need a PC for popcorn is because I bet it would be a lot easier to inoculate.

Experts: What don't you need a PC for? 'cause I don't have one.

Cheap ones usually dont have PSI meters. I could find a very cheap 1 at walmart, but I chose not to because it had no PSI meter.

www.ebay.com - I got a 16 QT for $20 and it works like a charm
www.pressurecooker-outlet.com - the cheapest I've found for new ones

Those are your 2 options for pressure cookers. You need a pressure cooker because 15 PSI cooks at 250 deg F or so, which is required to kill all of the endospores that grain harbors.

Also, from my own minimal personal experience, I'd like to say "fuck popcorn." In all 3 batches of jars, with the same care given, my rye has GREATLY outperformed my popcorn. If you do choose to go popcorn, simmer for a long time, I'm talking at least 45 minutes, but that's from my experience. I have people telling me that popcorn colonizes faster than rye, but they also say that it doesn't fruit as well. I am yet to experience any advantage of popcorn versus rye, my spores also germinated about 2-3 days slower on popcorn.

as for the syringes, if your batch fruits at all, just print those and make your own syringes. you'll save lots of money.

How are you innoculating? 4 holes around the edge of the lid or what? The reason I ask is because this is the way I inoculate BRF/Verm substrates and never get a clogged syringe. I think it's because I push the needle outward toward the glass as I insert it into the jar. By the time it makes it through the 1" dry verm layer (which doesn't cause clogs) it is touching the glass and I slide it down the surface untill fully inserted then inject. Doing it this way prevents clogs from the water/brf/verm muck. Hopefully this helps you in some way. Good Luck.

Follow PF tek Mycojunkie.

I aint no expert but as far as I know are BRF cakes the only which can be sterilized without a PC. Even though a PC is highly recomended.

Search for and read PF Tek.

Good luck.

Do you need a PC for ground up grains like popcorn or rye? That's just what BRF is and you don't need one there. Right?

Well, First I used 4 holes, but doing that caused me to use more spore solution than was needed. I should have just inserted the needle at the very edge, but I didn't. I'll have to do that next time. After the first one, I just used 1 hole in the middle and squirted in about 2 ccs or so. Next time I'll use rye and a PC too, and I'll have my own prints so it won't really matter. Thx for the PC links.

I agree spliff popcorn bites bigtime. Rye is the best, but the cheapest most readily availible is WBS, it performs very well IMO. I like getting syringes from shroomery venders cause all of them I have used have a angle ground on the needle that prevents clogging and you can just reuse them after sterilizing them. And do yourself a big favor and get some kind of PC, the weighted rocker ones work good.

I use the El Cheapo Mirro 8qt from Wal-Mart without a PSI meter but all I'm doing right now is BRF so it works fine. Never had a contam so far. *knocks on wood*

My view on pc's is like that of Harleys.
Right at this very moment, I am boiling brf, if I had to have one today, there is one for $17 @wally world.
I would rather hold out and get the all-american ;-)
