i just did my first casing and i want to know if i did it right. this is what i did:
1) i poured some verm into a mixing bowl and added some distilled water untill it was moist, not dripping when squeezed, but moist.
2) i used enough to fill the bottom of the, large, bowl a tiny bit less than an inch, i think. actually now that i think about it i think i used morer than an inch. im pretty sure that i used the right amount.
3) i took four 100% colonized cakes with panaleous cyanescens mycelium that were made from brf, verm, and steer manure, and i broke off small to medium sized chunks and placed them an top of the layer of verm.
4) i added a little more water to the verm in the mixing bowl so that if i took a large handful and squeezed it, it would averegely put out about 2 large drops of water. it was pretty wet actually.
5) i took the verm from the mixing bowl and put a small layer of it on top of the crumbled up cakes, just enough to fill the gaps.
6) i put some saran wrap over and fastened it with a tight rubber band and put it in a dark place.
now that you know what i did i have some questions:
1) did i do it right?!
2) should i cold shock them for 24 hours? (i have a pretty dirty fridge)
3) do i need to fan this thing and if so how often?
4) is there anything that i need to do that i didnt do or didnt ask a direct question about?

It doesn't sound like you've grown before? If i'm right then you sure picked a hard species to grow for your first time man. I've only tried cubensis, but from what i've heard pan cyan are more difficult. I hope it works though, they are a good shroom, good luck.

1) You need to poke some holes in the saran wrap.
2) Clean your fridge and when cold shocking place casings in a ziplock.
3) Don't fan it until it goes in the terrarium. (after colonization) Then, 2 - 3 times a day.
4) I'm 5 - 7 days ahead of you now, but do you know about misting?

i have grown cubensis before, but not using casing and i have alot of experience and i know exactly what not to do because i screwed up a few times before my first batch of cubensis ever fruited. so puscle, youre telling me that i poke some holes in the saran wrap, cold shock it when its ready to and fan it after i put it in the terrarium? i dont know about misting, i have experience with perlite, so thats all that i use. it sounds easy , but i still have a few more questions:
1) how big do i make the holes? (the saran wrap held on by a rubberband isnt very sealed)
2) what if it gets dried out?
3) i wait till all of the verm layer is colonized evenly and then i cold shock?
4) after i cold shock it, do i immediately put it in the terrarium??????

I hear cyanescens -being a denser mushroom- need less moisture than
cubensis for fruiting.

thats funny, right after i posted my new quesations i went to those links before you even told me to. thats wierd!!!! and ive never heard that a denser mycelium needs les moisture. i made my substrate wetter that usual for this batch and it colonized feaster :)

The procedure soundede pretty close to what I have read up on and I would suggest that you waituntil the top lair of verm is colonized evenly, then put light on them. Yuo don't have to fan it that often (maybe once everyday or two) until they are pinning. If the light doesn't cause them to pin, then you can cold shock them, but I would recomend an ice pack as they are not dirty, like you say your fridge is. That's all you gotta do. Good luck!!
