i just did my first casing and i want to know if i did it right. this is what i did: 1) i poured some verm into a mixing bowl and added some distilled water untill it was moist, not dripping when squeezed, but moist. 2) i used enough to fill the bottom of the, large, bowl a tiny bit less than an inch, i think. actually now that i think about it i think i used morer than an inch. im pretty sure that i used the right amount. 3) i took four 100% colonized cakes with panaleous cyanescens mycelium that were made from brf, verm, and steer manure, and i broke off small to medium sized chunks and placed them an top of the layer of verm. 4) i added a little more water to the verm in the mixing bowl so that if i took a large handful and squeezed it, it would averegely put out about 2 large drops of water. it was pretty wet actually. 5) i took the verm from the mixing bowl and put a small layer of it on top of the crumbled up cakes, just enough to fill the gaps. 6) i put some saran wrap over and fastened it with a tight rubber band and put it in a dark place. now that you know what i did i have some questions: 1) did i do it right?! 2) should i cold shock them for 24 hours? (i have a pretty dirty fridge) 3) do i need to fan this thing and if so how often? 4) is there anything that i need to do that i didnt do or didnt ask a direct question about? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee - I thought this community was about helping people. It sounds like you did it right. I have gotten mixed info on the casing you decided on. It was recommended to me that I not use manure or jiffy mix my first time out - as it possibly can increase contams. About the saran wrap - I have read that 5-7 days is sufficient "under wraps" then it can be removed. Someone else posted a pic in the cultivation section - check it out to compare your project. Also - re-read your tek (and other teks) if you are still unsure about your success rate. Good luck.

It sounds like you got the job done. I'm sure you know that many folks don't use a bottom casing layer. I tend not to, as it takes up room in the casing containers. Also, I like to let the mycelia recover for 24 hours of so before putting on the top casing. This not only speeds up growth through the casing layer, but helps to avoid sub-surface overlay. You definitely have the right idea on the casing moisture content. Water can always be added later via misting. There's nothing to be done now, just let it incubate until you see the mycelia poking through. At that point, could shocking might be a good option for pan cyans. Then put them in your fruiting chamber and keep the air exchanges going. Monkey's pans took a little over a week to pin @ 75 deg F / 94% RH. You're doing good man. As long as the acid spitting lemurs don't attack, you should achieve cultivation success. "The waiting is the hardest part" -Tom Petty
