Three Faulty Pots
    #3456437 - 12/06/04 08:56 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

The Buddha used the analogy of three faulty pots to explain how to remove obstructions to learning.

The first pot is upside down. Nothing can be poured inside it. This is analogous to reading S&P books while watching television. We're so distracted that very little of what we read goes into our minds.

The second faulty pot has a hole in the bottom. Something may go inside, but it doesn't stay there. We may read the book with attention, but if a friend later asks us what the chapter was about, we can't remember.

The third defective pot is dirty. Even if we pour fresh clean milk inside and it stays there, it becomes undrinkable. This is similar to filtering what we read through our own preconceptions and ideas. We won't undersand the subject correctly because it has been polluted with our misinterpretations.

It may be difficult to set aside our proconceptions, because sometimes we aren't aware that our ieas are prejudiced. One suggestion is to try to understand each topic in its own context, without re-interpreting it so it fits into another system we've already learned. In this way, we'll view it freshly, with an open mind.

Think about the ways that this plays a role in how you see, meet and interact with other people as well...

My apologies to Skorp. I just had to go for the record as the quickest ever pot, er post derailment.

*We now return you to the actual Zen discussion as intended*

Very good point Skorp. I re-interepret stuff to fit with how I already think all the time. Makes learning very slow. Or else, I will try to stear conversations into directions I am already familiar with so that I can get an upper hand. Man, my ego is a bastard!

Hahaha... but consider this: Is your ego really such a bastard, if you've managed to mold it into something that will acknowledge that it is not YOU, but your ego? I think your ego is actually a lot less of a bastard than some peoples' egos are.

But our egos are definitely bastards in general, so I guess I'll support your notion after all.

Yes, yes!  But MY ego is SUCH A BASTARD that it will say things like 'My ego is a bastard', just to make it SOUND like it is under control and thereby make it seem more 'spiritual'.  Sneaky, sneaky, naughty little ego.   SEE!  THERE IT GOES AGAIN!  AHHH DON'T LISTEN TO IT!
