is skeptical thinking irrational? coming to a conclusion for something that they have very little evidence of?

it depends.
There's a certain level of healthy skepticism.
Then there's the other kind..

Highly subjective question. I actually find that most skeptics do not actually do this, but instead just sit around shooting down other people's ideas without providing their own solid objective opinion. By doing so they effectively give you "nothing to hit"..

But I DO agree with the basic sentiment you are laying about individuals who DO form solid opinions on matters that they have no distinct reason to. I don't agree with doing this at all. If I see no evidence of something to either exist OR not exist, I do not give it an automatic dismissal. I consider it an unknown.

And if one were to consider it an unknown instead of a negative, by default their response would be nothing at all. Which is how I most often respond to such situations.

Anyone following me? Because I'm stoned, and the singing in my music is making it difficult to concentrate on what I'm saying... hahaha...

yupmost of the time i tend to think the same way, if there is no evidence or lack of it, it remains unknown.

skeptical thinking is like all thinking. it is a system of understanding, and it 'works' only with information that fits within its own parameters. but it is only a tool.

it is irrational to try to solve problems of love or emotion with mathematics.

it is irrational to try to design a fork lift with theology.

it is irrational to try to find god with skepticism.

Skepticism isn't about coming to conclusions. In fact it's quite the opposite: Skepticism in its purest form means never coming to a conclusion, but rather being comfortable with uncertainty.

"I do not give it an automatic dismissal.  I consider it an unknown."

  I'm with you. I consider this attitude to be one of "healthy skepticism."  Why embrace and defend the unknown as truth, or attack the unknown as lies, when the unknown is just that?
