Reduce Contamination and increase effectiveness of sterilization in pots and pans
    #3456279 - 12/06/04 08:18 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Pressure cookers work because they elevate the boiling point of water above 212 degrees F (100 deg C). This make serlization of the jars very easy. Because the water in the jars that you are sterlizing isn't chemically pure, none of the water in the jars reaches boiling, which is a good thing. However, if we add just a little bit of salt to the solution of boiling water in the regular kitchen pot we are using to sterlize, and the jars are in contact with the boiling water, we are able to do a little bit of a better job sterlizing the jars. The most difference this could make is maybe 5-6 degrees, but every little bit helps, a few degrees for that hour could just mean the difference between a contaminated substrate and a sterlized one. Questions and comments appreciated.

or an extra 30 minutes to that hour can mean the differance between contam and not. 1 hour sucks ass. 1.5 your a 1,000 times better off.

and i would say the same but good thinking by the way. always look for ways to improve. one day you will find yourself thinking about everything you see and how you can apply it to shrooms. peace and good luck. oh yeah welcome to the shroomery. feel free to ask anything you have questions about. it is a better way to learn then by trial and error.

Cool idea.

The boiling point is raised ~0.5?C for every 29g of salt dissolved into each 1 liter of water. So if you use 4 liters of water to boil, and you add 116g of salt, your water will boil at 212.9?F(assuming sea level, pure water, etc).

Also remember that if you are above sea level, your water is boiling at less than 212?F. For each 1,000 feet above sea level, the boiling point drops 1.8?F.

If you have hard water(lots of dissolved minerals in your water), that will also raise the boiling point by a degree or two.

Also.. lol... the boiling point will depend on your local weather.

At sea level, water will boil at 212?F @ 29.92mmHg.

If you wait until High Pressure is over your area, for example, your barometric pressure was 30.50mmHg, your water would be boiling at 213?F.

Soooo... If you have hard water, dissolve lots of salt in it, and wait until a bright sunny day in summer, your water could be boiling at almost 220?F

if the salt were to get in the jars would it be bad?
and what if you put salt in a pressure cooker?

Salt in the jars would be bad, but It's fairly easy not to do that. There is no reason to put salt in a pressure cooker. A pressure cooker is already creating water that is above 220 without boiling.

Psilygirl, That also depends on other factors. It is important to remember that inside the jar, the water isn't pure water: It is mixed with substrate, which raises the bp of the water in the substrate. Some salts affect the bp of water more than others. CaCl2 has a greater effect than Table Salt. CaCl2 is often used as road salt.
