Leeching horse poop
    #3455138 - 12/06/04 02:46 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Are there any leeching teks or anything? I just got a 30 gal Rubbermaid full of h0rse crap, and I need to get it leeched. Can I leech wet poo, or do I need to dry it then leech? I got a mix of old dried up apples, and some fresh poop too. The suns not out so I cant just lay it out in the sun, should I oven dry it?

Cool, Ill search too. I know my poop needs leeched cause its fresh poop for the most part. It has allot of green plant material in it, the poop has a olive green tint to it. My poop is very fibrous too, nice and airy, I'm glad I chose horse rather than cow, it seems to me cows digest the grasses allot more efficiently than the horses, the horse poop has allot of un-digested grass and grain in the poop.

You leech poop to get the ammonia out because ammonia stops the shrooms from growing, its just soaking it in water, then squeeze the water out.

Do you mix yours with soaked wheat straw, or just use poop?
I think mine has enough grass material that it dont even really need the straw, but I want my bulk to colonize asap so it wont contam easy.

I don't want to use straw at all. There has to be some soit of aeration substitute. What about some pressure cooked beans?

BIG TUB, added horse manure, straw & water

Added WEIGHT to sink straw

Let soak as long as you wish, drain on screen (or whatever).

Sun dry until moisture content is good (not dripping - a lot).

Bag or turkey pan pasturize in oven @ 175F, a few hours.

Allow to cool to room temp.

Adjust moisture content (as needed) & your ready to GO

Do you chop your straw to 1-3 inch pieces as suggested?

I use an ELETRIC HEDGE TRIMMER to downsize straw.

But, don't go to any great effort, in doing so.

If your in Farm land, find someone with commercial size straw chopper & get jiggy with it, down to any size you want.

Large amounts of chopped straw storage is a PITA. Had giant cardboard boxes full & stacked in garage.
