To Case or Not To Case
    #3453762 - 12/06/04 08:41 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I recently spawned to several 1'X1'X1' poo/straw substrates and I'm wondering whether it would be more advantageous to put a casing layer on it now that its done colonizing or to wait until the second flush.

My main concern is that there is some straw in the substrate and that a casing layer will cause it to contaminate.

Any suggestions or guidelines?
Thanks in advance.

Is that measurement correct? As in a foot deep? That would make it a big cube.

Why would a casing layer cause it to contaminate? Casing generally helps agains contams as long as it's clean and non-nutritative.

I think that you'd definitely better case once it's done colonizing. Casing helps create a microclimate and protects against contamination. Also, I'm not completely sure whether a substrate layer that deep invites contamination or not, but I'm pretty sure that it stops being beneficial after like 6-8". You could have doubled your square footage and probably your yields if you had spawned to 1'x1'x6" containers.

Do yourself a favor and case that baby for the reasons listed already. Also, that casing layer is like a resevoir of moisture, from misting, for the myc. and then the shrooms to drink from.

Hmm, my bad for some reason I wrote that its a foot deep. I meant to write its a half foot deep, so 6 inches.

The reason I'm asking is because most of the time I've ever had contams they have started in the casing layer or just underneath it. I've always previously cased poo/straw with great success until the fourth or fifth flushes where it began to contam. Guess that's decent.
Thanks for the replies. Just one more question.

Does anyone know if coco coir is nutritive? I use a coir/verm casing layer.

To the best of my knowledge coir isn't nutritive, it just creates a nice casing because of it's fiberous and airy properties, that mixed with verm's water retension makes for a wicked casing material.

Also, put a casing layer over that straw, it will be the first part to contam.  I've read in teks and from other people that you should try to keep mostly poo on top of your substrate so that when you break off a fruit, you don't expose the straw which is incredibly susceptible to contaminants compared to the poo.

Good luck with this!

1'x1'x6" is great. Yea, add the casing layer once its 100% colonized and do what he said about not letting the straw be on top.

After the fourth or fifth flush the mycelium is alot less vigorous and is about petered out, so its normal for contams to start to creep in about that point. Its not because of the casing.

Thanks a lot to everyone who replied. I'll be casing as usual then.
Good idea about having a layer of poo on top of the rest of the substrate. I'll be sure to do that next time.

Peace.

Lemme see if afoaf has this right, you put down casing layer, then colonized substrate, then straw, then poo, then another casing layer??
