I found these as I as walking around today. They are growing in various old stumps of bushes and things that have been cut down.

It just recently rained, and most of the veils have torn, but I can see another flush getting ready to spring up. About half of them are turning into icky goo... but the other half look right fine.

I picked one , it didn't bruise at all, cut through stem...just pure white fungus, no staining of any color. Gills are big, wide, and the caps look like soggy upside down paper plates. They vary in color, but mostly all shades of brown. As far as I can tell, spores are either brown as well or gray/black. Opened caps measure about an inch and a half in diameter, and stems are hollow like cubensis but a bit more fiborous. Mature stems about 2-3 inches long.

depending on the age of the shroom. I hope the pics are good enough. Worth collecting spores? What do you think they are?

"About half of them are turning into icky goo... "

This indicates that your mushrooms are of the genus Coprinus. Not active, not worth eating.

I concur. They look close to Coprinus atramentarius. Toxic with alcohol (within about 3 days), not worth eating even without alcohol.

Happy mushrooming!
