How to improve second flush/Dry
    #3454152 - 12/06/04 12:54 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

My first question is regarding second (third, etc.) flushes. I know with cakes you dunk. However I am using WBS spawned to straw, cased with 50/50 coco/verm. My first flush was not ideal, not as even pin set as I would have liked, but it seems to have improved while it was fruiting. Is this possible? Anyway, is there anyting I should do after I pick the last shroom to improve second flush? Also, for drying I was thinking wiremesh over large bowl with damprid covered with bag. Would this work? Two things I have heard and am wondering about...Must drying be done in complete darkness, and would placing the covered bowl in a fridge help? Thanks.

You don't have to dry in complete darkness, but just out of direct sunlight. Your drying chamber would work if it was large enough to hold alot of desiccant and/or your don't have that much shrooms to dry. Once you start getting into the large 2-3 oz dry flush range and up, it is wise to just air dry or use a dehydrator or something. desiccant is usually used to pull that last little bit of stubborn moisture out of the fruits so you can store them long term without having them mold up.

Here is what afoaf does: Air dry shrooms by using a fan in the summertime or by placing them on mesh/towel in a room with a heater in the winter time. After shrooms are almost completely dry (3 days to a week), collect shrooms and put in large drying chamber with lots of desiccant overnight or so.

Hope this helps.

I would just patch any damage caused from harvesting the first flush, and keep the casing layer glistening.

manto I'm wondering about what I should be doing to optimize my second flushes as well.

How does one rehydrate a casing like you do with dunking a cake?

Should I give it a nice thorough misting after I pick all aborts/pins/mushrooms off before the second flush?

Should I just dunk the whole thing and then recase?

Hmm.. all I want is another 1 oz dry flush or atleast as close as I can get.

You can dunk but I think most people just patch and mist and throw back into the fruiting chamber..I've experimented with both and will choose one as I go but I'm unsure of the results as of yet. I think with strains like Brazils that set in like 4 flushes worth of pins on the first flush dunking causing them to abort but on casings that did a nice first flush and a poor second flush a dunk gave them a better 3rd then 2nd..if no pins were present and if it seemed the issue was lack of water. I think often if your first flush was poor because of a poor pinset its usually fixed by the second flush and your pinset is more even. Given good water supply and fresh air you should get a similar if not bigger second flush then first flush.

I may not be misting enough each day..  perhaps I should mist more than twice a day, and a bit heavier between flushes than I have been.

I'm getting tons of pins and primordia for my second flush, but it should be maturing by now and a lot of the pins are just growing 1 or 2" and then opening their caps.

With the first flush I was getting 5 - 6" tall mushrooms with nice 50 cent sized caps or so.

Here's hoping for the third flush.
