Yeilds from semi-large casings.
    #3451887 - 12/05/04 08:56 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

My buddy had about 12 rye jars that were fully colonized today, so he made three large casings. He used 6qt. plastic trays, with one qt. bottom casing layer 50/50+ (about a half inch) - substrate layer 4 pint rye jars (about 1.5 to 2 inches deep) - then another quart of 50/50+ on top of that (about a half inch). He is worried that maybe his yields will suffer, because he has never made casings this large. He usually uses about 2 pint jars per casing and yields close to one dry ounce per 2 pint casing. What do the experts here think about the yield. I will keep you informed on the actual yield, they will prob. need to remain in the incubator for a couple days - be patched and then inserted in the fruiting chamber, so they will prob. be ready sometime around next weekend. Just tell me what you guys think - thanks....

P.S. The strain is Ecuador - and the casing are very similar in "stats" to that of Dougie fresh's casings.

I dont see any reason why yields would dwindle because of larger casing. Larger casing will produce larger yields. I dont think you're wasting substrate at all unless you go into depths deeper than 2 inches with rye. If you're just expanding the surface area, yields should stay high. If he's averaging 1oz dry per 2 pint casings, I would think he'd get 2oz dry off a 4 pint casing.

Yeah, I think my buddy doesn't really like "large mushrooms" - he says that they are less potent per gram and hard to dose correctly because of this. He was thinking his yields would suffer however because he just can't imagine 2oz dry sticking out of the top of these 6qt. plastic containers.

*winx at derx*...good freaking question. Thats what I wanna know...I am trying to get an idea of yields. Its the only things I haven't researched, and I am already growing

That one oz. dry is from the first and second flush. My buddy throws out the casings after that because he believes that the third and so on flushes are much less potent than the first and second. He does many things that are slightly eccentric, but hes does ok...

129G

These big boys are as potent as any little cube

Bigger casings contain more moisture & nutes, thus flush a lot longer. With each flush, I get less pins, but bigger honking shrooms.

Mortor mix tub (36X26X8)with 75 lbs of substrate
Seem like it flushed forever & they kept getting bigger

Nope, they don't exist anymore & I would not want spores from where they went (digested).

But, you can do it - yourself.
Just keep plugging along. :tongue2:

It just takes time & patience.

........ahhhhhh ......& good compost substrates.

4 quarts is really not that big IMHO, but compared to 2 pint casings, it's huge! Expect 1 to 1 1/2 oz dry off the first flushor two. Rough estimate.
