Incubator purchasing questions
    #3451065 - 12/05/04 08:05 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Would someone who has an incubator mind telling me where they purchased it, and for how much, also the size of it. (in dimensions or in terms of cakes)

hey go to a big lots or any dept store look for rubber maid 4 gallon tubs they should be dark blue..mine are..those were 6 bucks for 2..cheap. then figure out how much water you will need by filling it up justa little bit then push down on the tubs then pull up fast you will see the water line on the inner tub ok? then i added bleach to my water..i use a towel folded twice witha heating pad under the tubs. but i keep mine ina cabenit for a dresser so the heat kinda stays.. kinda cheap basic..but works for me no probs yet..keep my pad on low or around 2 setting

lol, no offense guys but I wouldn't recommend either of those. A 4 gallon tub as an incubator is way too small. I use an 18 gallon and I can barely get 36 jars in there, which I'm sure somewhere along the road you'll want at least that many. My 18 gallon tubs were $3 each. As well as agar's idea, maybe just a bit too much for a beginner. ;]

see thats where everyone differs..i just gave out some basic info..mine is perfect im not trying to grow a shroom farm..mine is small,simple no worries..36 jars is alot to keep up with..start out how you want man..i could care less. my incubator might not be top notch but it works and my wbs jars are doing great hasn't even been a week..showing fablous growth on some of my jars..so thnk twice baout how you going to heat all those 36 jars..and what kinda cash flow..i've had to scrape extra money for my project..

My buddy spent close to $75 on his incubator. It is what is called a T in T, which you can look up in the FAQ how to construct. My buddies is two 50gal. tubs at wallmart $30 - a 200w submersible fishtank heater $30, 4 heavy plastic risers $6, 4 bungee cords about $10. Wallmarts are not as abundant in my country like where buddy back in the states , so I can't get a nice large incubator like this for the same prices shopping at one large store like wallmart. I don't know if this is the case for you or not - but if you live in America take $75 to wallmart, get all that stuff, and you'll have an incubator large enough to fit about 90 jars comfortably.

For spawn jars or bags alone, a metal file cabinet works great.
Heating pad under base, toilet flush simple. :thumbup:

I think that filing cabinet is pretty ill, - do you have the drawer above that one heated as well? I don't think it would work for me because its pretty cold all year round here and my flat stays about 67 all the time.

Distrubiting heat is so overated, only prob. i see with the cabinet is that if u dont constantly check them and one gets contams then ur F-ed. But i'm sure hes pretty confident in all his procedures and has every reason to boe, keep it up Mr. Wizard, lol

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No contam problem at all. Jars all have double tyvek covers (under & over lid)& coffee filters over that. Any that go bad, clean out elsewhere & recycle later. Only chance of contam is in innoc or G2G stage, when jars are innoc'ed or opened. Not incubation stage. Thats just where any prior F/U will show up.
That is a 5 drawer cabinet with about 150 jars. Room temp is 72F, heating pad under base keeps bottom drawer around 86/7F & top drawer around 80/1F. Heat rises  :wink::thumbup:
I went to mostly bags, now & only use jars for special prodjects.
For big spawn, bags are the bomb.
