Using water from a well for misting ?
    #3449859 - 12/05/04 01:54 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Just wondering if one could use water from a well for misting casing ?
Basically it's rain water but i'm concerned about contams that might be in the water..

Sterilize it in PC .
Depending on where you live and quality of water could effect things , like mineral content , ph .
Consider using distilled water IMHO .
Good Luck
But yes you can use it especially if all you got , better than letting them go thirsty

I'm assuming it all depends on the area you live in. I use well water with no problems. I've used it in every process from mixing the substrate, making the perlite layer, and I also use it in my ultrasonic humidifier (which I use as a mister when I fan my tub). I haven't had any problem with contams at all and my cakes are pinning just fine, but it could be different in your region I suppose.

Boil it vigorously, covered with a tight fitting lid, for 20-30 minutes.

Test it's pH. The higher the better(although if it's like 9.0 that'd be pretty freaky).

You could also have it tested for mineral content by your local Water Works. Probably be a small fee. For example, if it was high in magnesium.... it would be undesirable.

Hmm, that brings an interesting question to mind. I wonder if boiling the water with pine needles would raise the PH if it were low? I know it's probably getting into the unexplored territory of mycology since you can buy agents in the pet store to raise PH but I try to always look for the most cost effective solutions to these types of problems.

I'm pretty sure pine needles are acidic... Coniferous forest soil is acidic. So that wouldn't work.

The stuff at the pet store is just sodium bicarbonate, baking soda.

If your water is crazy low by itself(like 5.0), it probably has a lot of sulphur or something in it and probably isn't going to be worth correcting. You should just use bottled water in that case. Or get a Reverse Osmosis filter setup.

yes pine needles are very acidic..
I had a pool surounded by pines before and we had so much problem keeping the water basic enough because the needles were falling into the pool !

I'll have the water tested for sure
What if one couldn't boil the water, would it still be usable ?

thats hard to say, my water is supplied from an artiesian spring, the water was
tested and is as pure as you'll ever find, I still boil mine. an alternative is
to use 10% h2o2 to 90% water in the misting bottle
