laugh with me, or at me. the new guy has got to learn.
    #3448524 - 12/05/04 02:56 AM (12 years, 9 days ago)

ive aquired alot of time on my hands in a place above the clouds and far from pavement. what to do? oh ya, we all know what is commin.
ive been reading teks and collecting odd bits of equipment and knowledge for about three months now.
i heard something about sterile environments, aquired a free chemiclave first thing. next came tubs and tubes, thermometers and hygrometers, vermiculite and perlite... the usual gung ho dumbass.
i got me a few spore prints in the mail. thank you mailperson for all your travels. so ive got this pile of stuff that my wife thinks is a crank factory or something, she wants it out. fine and dandy by me, i think she is a bacteria infested contamination machine.
next aquisition.... the big box. wanted a premaid shed but havent won the lotto yet. so the next best thing is the big wood box on wheels that my neighbor used to transport his stained glass..... $50 (bargain?)
with a large compartment in back and a small one up front i think im gonna have me an environmentally controlled trailer.... 43.5 inchs X 50 inchs X 45 inchs.
so i start by bleqaching the fuck outta the whole thing. i mean like alot of bleach, 2 gallons over 2 days. next, painted the inside with a paint primer called "Killz". then i coated the inside with a product that is used as a spray on bed liner.
plans including fans and heaters and fridge coils and ultrasonic humidifiers are becoming reality very quickly.
untill i decide to flip the whole box over. mold, mildew, shit of a contaminated nature, evidence my wife has been here. damn so back to the drawing board. oops, wait i fergot to draw the plans before i want and bought everything it would take to build me another one today.
what im really wanting to do here is make a fairly large box (fruiting chamber) that has its own climate controls that possibly detach to become a laneir flow hood?
and hows this? the chemiclave uses nasty chemicals. what if i put h202 in it instead?
feedback? ideas? plans? taunts? lets have it, cuz im gonna build something and it would be cool if it worked.

Broken, non-functional freezers often are given away at appliance places. They are perfect incubators & fruiting containers - retrofitted to suit. Just a thought.

so i covered the inside of the first box in floor adhesive and vinyl. popped an huge squirrel cage (more like a castle) fan on top with as many furnace filters and such that i could get my hands on. the final filter is the one that really hurt the pockets. the 24x32 inch hepa filter. this box has turned into the biggest flow hood ever. the sit in flow hood.

on another issue ive been wondering about and have make progress with is this, ive got the balls to put h202 in the chemiclave. it seems to work. im gonna mess with it more tomarrow. i let it go for about 10 minutes today and it didnt blow up. tomarrow we try 20!

after the first box showed rot in the bottom i decided i wasnt gonna be pushed away fro0m this vision of an all in wonderful box. i got a fishtank messuring 48 inches by 13 inchs by 25 up. did you know you can drill holes in glass, its true. you can if you got the moneys for the special bit. i retro fit this tank with tubes and air stones and exhaust, waterbed heater, and ultrasonic (neato) humidifier, couple defferent hygrometers placed in the tank. found a nice fitting plexiglass that i cut into 4 pieces to make its handling easier. i know that this is all a bit of overkill but with that knowledge i will fine tune this tank.

onto the box.

im gonna take some pix cuz this box is just to much to explain. in the mean time look at my pix in my profile why doncha.

so to have a pump that controlled exhaust but sent half of the exhaust out of the tank, and the other half to mix back in with the new air flow. would this not be better? i think i read that in one of pauls books in the section about building specs on a large lab size operation.
also,
let me get this part straight? layers is the next subject of questioning.
water fills about an inch under geolite, and geolite sits at about 3.5-4.5 inchs? bubble wands or whatever underneath all of it ? on top an humidifier? with a timer on which pertuculars?
ya and lets get back to that whatever part?
once again, cuz im stoned and that was a long thread.
which one is a wand and which one , wtf is the difference? i see, i like, i buy. i got two of em about a foot long each and they are maid of blue stone. is it the right ones?

tryin to get pix up right now

I didnt read alot of this...but umm if you havnt been told yet...dont use wood or cardboard as your fruiting chamber, casing containers, anything....mold WILL grow on them in high humidity. Try to keep it all plastics or painted metal. Unpainted metal works fine, rust doesnt hurt anything..its just a bit of a mess. You could do something like lining a closet with plastic..double layer..walls, ceiling and floors. It might look like this if you did:

--------------------
"life is like a drop of rain getting closer and closer to falling into a lake, and then when you hit the lake there is no more rain drop, only the lake."

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)
Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay

On that note scatman, couldn't he tack up some double-layer plastic inside his box to keep mold out? I'm interested as well...

You could but I wouldnt suggest it.

My method actually isnt the best...its better to have a freestanding greenhouse in the middle of a room with just enough room to walk around it. To make sure nothing builds up between the walls and plastic or carpet and plastic. However I dont have the space for that sort of thing and have to make due this way. As of yet it hasnt been an issue and I've been running 2 closets this way for about 4 months. High maintenance but worth it. Using a wooden box when you dont have to (many many plastic tubs are available..big rubbermaids for liek 10 bucks) is another story.

so the wood box, ive been layering it in this stuff called blackjack, its basically roof repair stuff. its black and looks like tar but dries to almost solid. after three layers of that ive got another three layers of some white stuff called elastomwtric roof compund er somethin like that. it stretchs upto 300% and its not stinky. keep in mind this is just the box that the chamber sits in, nopt the chamber itself. ive been a busy man and will write more about it later today.

Kick the bacteria machine out and BAM ! All the free space you need man , and alot less work than you are describing !
Bachelor life with no room mates ... that is heavenly , and mushrooms like it too
I bet you all those petroleum fumes in that box will make for some really cool mutations ! :smirk:

Agar's got teh sh33t
You talked of all the gadgets, and what better than one of those mini fridges for free at a repair place.
You could put casters on it, incubate, disconnect and connect for flow hood or whatever, you could even cut a hole in the door for light when you wanted light, or sight, and it could be locked too ; )... the possibilities are endless.
Hats off and GL.

:peace:

Edit *Not to take away from any other ideas, I didn't read it all
